I haven't been to China and haven't used this company but I get emails from them - Intrepid Travel. They used to be more into staying in sort of down scale local places but have now a number of tours they call Comfort Level. They seem to have quite a few choices for China. Just an idea.....

I have gone on many tours and last year went with GCT to Australia, New Zealand and Figi. I found them to be very origanized, a great price and good tours. This was my first trip with them and all the people I went with raved about GCT. I am going with my family to China/Japan in November and spoke to people on my last tour and they spoke very highly of GCT for that trip so that is what I'm using. The group was not large about 30. I found they have a lot of groups going out so the 150 could have been many groups going out from GCT. I think you should speak with people at the GCT site.

We just returned from a 13 day Historic China group tour with China Focus Travel: "best travel bang for the buck ever" imhpo.
The HC trip is their "loss leader", but the quality of everything (except Air China's food) was outstanding.
I would request Veg, Indian, etc. on AC, but with Ambien on board, we slept through more than a couple of meals.
Buen viaje.

A few years ago I traveled with China Focus (their 12 day tour) and it was superb. My friends then went the following year on their 22 day tour and want to go back with CF. Don't know if they'll match you with a roommate. But it's worth asking as you can't beat the price and everything is covered.

My cousin & husband went last year with Grand Circle and had a terrific time and I know they'll try to match your relative with a roommate. I've been on 2 GCT trips and my cousin on about 3 and we've never had a problem.

My wife and I used China Focus the summer before last and had a great time. They undercut everyone significantly on price, but not on value. We're probably taking another trip using them this summer. Once out of the big cities, they took us more off the beaten track. Our group was about 25, which was perfect. I would highly recommend them. We used Pacific Delight to go to Thailand last summer. They were good, but the food didn't do as much for us as with China Focus. We love Thai food, but it was definitely toned down to "Western tastes". We like it spicy! China is an amazing place and is changing so rapidly that we want to get our fill before things change too much. Hope this helps.

Also used China Focus for 5 of their tours and they offer a roommate service, you call and tell them you would like to share and if theres another same sex single you call or they call you. Thats to see if you can get along, you think you can and call CF back and no single pay. I've done and it works out just fine.

Hello,
I've travelled with Grand Circle on three trips--Mexico/Copper Canyon, Thailand, and a Russia River cruise/tour last year.
I think they do a great job for the money. As a solo, I've enjoyed the larger groups (30-40 people) and have usually found friendly folks to visit/tour/dine with.
The pace on these tours is easy--3 & 4 nights in each place.
I'm sure I will use them again.

Try China Focus Travels. We had 10 people in our group, great guides and good pace.

Just in case anyone searches this thread when looking for China tours, we wanted to follow up with a post-trip comment. In the end, our relative decided to go with Grand Circle Tours to China this summer. She could not say enough positive things about the trip and about the tour company. GCT turned out to be the perfect choice. Thanks to everyone who provided advice this spring!
