I'm leaving in three weeks, and I'm confused about outlet adapter plugs. I do not need electricty converters, but rather, a plug that acts as a "go between" for my US devices and the wall plug. I just wrote to Tim at Indian Panorama, and he sent me a Google link to the three prong type "D" plug. However, my older son, who traveled with me previously in India (2009), insists that the standard Euro plugs (cylindrical two prongs) will work fine. We own several of the two prongs, but if I need the three prongs, I will have to order from Amazon.

Please advise if you have traveled to either country recently. It would be helpful to send a link of the plug you advise using.

I would take both two and three pins, it may vary depending on where you are. I would have expected the three pin to be UK style, which was what I encountered in Pakistan, but no.

In Sri Lanka the official standard is now the 13A three square pin type same as the UK. Most hotels etc will now have this however many places also have the older 2 pin type. You can buy a cheap chinese made adapter available at most super markets and small hardware stores that are to be seen in every little small town everywhere in Sri Lanka for about two dollars. These will take European, US, Japanese plugs.

You could also bring a more sophisticated multi adapter such as the SK Ross

I've always used three prong plugs in India (was last there in Feb this yr) plus have two universal multi-country kind, as mentioned by Kathie. The latter are somewhat larger and heavier.
I do this kind of "overkill" all the time, and wonder why later, but I continue do it. So, this is my recommendation:
Order two of the three pronged adaptors from Amazon (cheaper than going to Radio Shack, which has them too) and bring those, plus the two-pronged type you and your son used last time. ( Some of the adaptors come in packs with several other kinds of adaptors --for you next trip to wherever perhaps.) Once they arrive, throw them into a small ziplock bag, toss it into your luggage, and voila! This is one of the things you can control pre-trip---unlike much else about wonderful but chaotic India.
Remember: nearly everything you need, but might have forgot at home, can be purchased there---including adaptors. True, shopping for stuff is the last thing you want to do on arrival, but take comfort in knowing it's a backup.

I say all this empathetically, California Lady. Leaving for Italy in nine months what's the first thing I worried about? Yup---plug adaptors!

These 3 pin sockets also take a two pin plug, which is generally what comes with a mobile phone or camera charger.

Normally when I travel, I carry a Multi plug adaptor (Samsonite has a robust one) and I carry a Spike Guard like the one here:

Because it gives me multiple sockets to charge many devices simultaneously (a reality in our increasingly electronic life).

Kathie, if you're seeing this--thank you! My universal adaptors are now at least ten years old. They work fine, but are bigger and heavier than the smaller single-country use ones I also have. Having just checked your link above...wow! It's perfect, with a USB port enclosed. I've ordered it to add to my bulging zip lock bag of too many plug adaptors!
CaliforniaLady, you should get this too. It's about $15 but will have use beyond your upcoming trips to Sri Lanka and India.

You are welcome. Once I found these adaptors, I never have to think about which adaptor for which country. It makes packing easier.

A friend just ordered two! I might order the lime green one also. Heck, it's nice to have pretty, bright colors, besides the current dull white and black gizmos in the "adaptor" bag. From now on, every overseas trip will remind me of you and this recommendation! Thanks again, Kathie!

Update: I received the universal adaptor referenced above. It does not include the standard three prong Type D plug for India and Sri Lanka. The product box lists countries where the device can be used--neither India nor Sri Lanka is listed. The product's Amazon website description, however, does list India under Type F (the narrow two prong) plug.
For me, it will be fine for an imminent trip to both Italy and UK., and I'm happy to add it to my gizmo collection. But for anyone going to India and Sri Lanka-- have the Type D plug adaptor too, just to be sure!

Well, CaliNurse, we're going to have to set up an adaptor exchange.

My son contends, as affirmed by theloststory (who lives in India) in a post above, that the two prong Euro plug fits nicely into the Indian three prong socket.
