Our experience with the Sheraton Royal Orchid in Bangkok

We've only been back a week and with Christmas roaring into view, I don't have time to post a total report of our 5 weeks in Thailand just yet, but wanted to post a rave for the Sheraton Royal Orchid for those of you who are planning.

I booked directly with Sheraton, used the "Seniors Rate" and acquired a Tower Deluxe room for $141. USD for the first week of November 2007 (pre-paid so no upcharge as exchange rates fluctuated). The room was lovely. A great river view, good size, huge bath, all the amenities, free laundry and pressing.

Tower rooms also give you access to the Concierge lounge for free. In it you have Internet access, newspapers, magazines, a concierge to help with anything. You also have breakfast each day. This was a huge spread in the lounge -- juices, coffees (espressos, etc.) a hot egg dish, hot meats, cold meats & cheeses, cereals, yogurt, loads of fruit, breads, danish, Asian dishes, on and on and on. We could have also gone downstairs to the main dining room for a breakfast that was too gi-normous to imagine with stations doing anything and everything. At other hotels we visited, this buffet breakfast would have been at least $15 per person.

Each evening the lounge offered cocktails - again this was included in our room price. I think the official policy is two drinks each, but the servers kept offering wine all during the cocktail period to everyone with no real limit. The appetizer spread was so vast that on at least two nights after having tasted just one of each offering, we were unable to go off to dinner after. We'd had large, late lunches, so after the hors d'ouevers we wandered off for coffee and a foot massage. Its hard to put a dollar value on the cocktail hour(s), but once we stopped with friends in the lobby bar for a drink. Six drinks (only, no snacks) cost us $80! I was amazed.

For $141 per night (inclusive), I feel the SRO Tower rooms might be one of the best deals in Bangkok.

More later. Happy Holidays!

$141 per night for the Towers is a fabulous deal. As you know, the Towers is my "home" in Bangkok. One thing you forgot to mention is that Towers amenities include free laundry. I love coming home with a suitcase full of beautifully laundered and pressed clothes! As a "regular" in the Towers, Im so glad to hear that you enjoyed it!

TC, I wonder if we crossed paths in the Towers. We were there Nov. 4-7 before we flew to Sri Lanka.

PS I've never heard of a two drink limit... nor have I ever seen them decline someone another drink.

Sadly, Kathie, we didn't cross paths. I was hoping we would after all the great advice you'd given me while planning my trip. We didn't arrive until the 9th. Your seat in the Tower Lounge was probably still warm.

We not only loved the Sheraton, but adored Anantara....but that's another post for another day.

Merry Christmas!

We stayed in the ROS 2 years ago and enjoyed it.

Mt wife wanted some laundry done, so she picked out a few things, then added a few more since laundry was so cheap. It came back in a wicker basket with a beautiful covering with a bow.

Then we got a bill for $60. My wife mistook the exchange rate by 10X.

LOL, Jed, Haven't we all done that somewhere?

If you'd been in the Towers, the laundry would have been free - my favorite price!

The ROS is always our home in BKK. You got a great Towers rate. We use Starwood points for free. My only regrte is that the hated Bob is not online to read this glowing review.

I also note that because of your appreciation of the ROS any penalty will be waived. We're still hoping for a report, but no sanctions.

Kathie, et al; What is that delicious yogurt and granola mixture that is served on the breakfast buffet in the SRO lounge? I think it contains a generous helping of coconut. It is positively addictive. I could have eaten three bowls with fresh papaya each morning.

Yes, it is yummy. I also assume it has lots of coconut.

He's in Arizona. It's a very long bus ride, so we don't know when he's coming back.

Don't worry, i just e-mailed him this thread. No reason for him to miss an impartial report on the superb ROS.

Arizona? How does that compare with BKK and Romania?

Ken, I've not heard any date yet. I'm hoping it will be in OCT again.

We don't have a date.

It is likely to be in October. Ken, if you're planning to attend, put your proposed date(s) in early. We are flexible at first.

The GTG might be in October, but it definitely will not be at the Hotel@MIT. Latter has been sold and rebranded as a Le Meridien.

According to the Globe, "rooms and the lobby will be renovated" and a "new 'gourmet restaurant concept' is being developed."

Andy,
Do you have another location in mind for the GTG? I always liked the hotel@mit even though I did not stay there this last time. Too expensive (and also FILLED by the time I got around to making my reservation).

I also hope for October. Ken has to travel the farthest, so he gets first choice of dates. I'm flexible...

BillT
Travel is an adventure. You never know what you are going to experience. That's what makes it so exciting. Romania may not have been the BKK Pen sort of experience but I'll bet it was an interesting time. I salute B and K for going someplace off the tourist route. Are you coming to BOS? How about HNL?
