Orphanages in Sri Lanka

We will be in Sri Lanka in July. I have been trying to find out if there are any orphanages in the Passikudah area as we will be there for 5 days. Or Harbarana for 3 days or Nuwara Eliya for 2 days.

Ideally I would like to be able to contact the orphanage in advance to check what items we could bring them.

Any advice would be helpful.

Thank you.

Do a search on this forum, as others have asked this question, and a local who posts here (Mohammed) gave contact information for an orphanage.

If in the Passekudah area suggest you contact Rev Terrence phone +94 77 23 44 078 who is head of the Methodist church in Batticaloa. Terrence is the best, top notch contact, the Rotary Club of Colombo has coordinated several humanitarian projects with him including orphanages, maternity clinics, fishing communities, schools etc and he will guide you well. Suggest you focus on the area just north of Passikudah such as Vakarai, Verugal etc. I just passed that way few days back saw a lot of need for shoes for school kids.

Thank you very much Mohammed just the sort of information I was looking for.

I hate to ask this, but with so much Foreign Aid being flung at Sri Lanka why are any kids still walking around without decent footwear?

I dunno, better you ask the politicians in your country who probably deal with the politicians in my country! As a simple traveler locally in Sri Lanka, as well as in many parts of Africa, Asia, Outback Australia, etc I see lots of poverty and depravation and try to do what little I can to uplift lives of the less fortunate wherever possible.

Hi All,
By chance, while visiting a village in Polonnaruwa, I get to know about this orphanage from the villagers: Bosath Balika Lama Niwasaya Orphanage. The Madame hopes for in-kind donations of old clothes, toys, books etc for the children. This orphanage is not well-known to the public because it is not easy to go there. The Madame cannot speak English and the orphanage does not have Internet, and so she has requested my help to create a simple website for their orphanage: www.srilankachildren.com.
