Oriental Hotel Bangkok

I'm a bit miffed with the Oriental. Wanted to go there for a cocktail, but they wouldn't let me in through the front door 'cause I was wearing sandals. They were, however, very nice and apologetic about it. However, it is a nice hotel (I've stayed there before) and I intend to bring my shoes with me....

The Oriental is a great place. We stayed in the Garden Wing. Our room was a two level (stairs from living area to bed and bath) with a great view of the river and its activities. You can expect the best as far as amenities are concerned.

The Hotel has a beautiful lobby and the service is as good as it gets with a private butler assigned to each room.

Sala Rim Nam, one of several restaurants at the Oriental is across the river and has a good Thai Dance show. The French restaurant is reputedly one of the best in SE Asia.

Enjoy your stay.

We went to the Oriental just to look at it and they gave us a hard time about walking through the hotel with shorts and sandals on. My mom warded off some of the hotel staff by speaking to them in Thai (she was living in Bangkok at the time) while my husband (boyfriend at the time) and I snuck a peek at the pool and river view. It was a beautiful hotel but I would have a hard time allowing myself to stay there with it being that pretentious.

Linda, I am going to Bangkok in July and am staying at the Oriental Hotel. I have never stayed there before, but my sister has stayed there about 6 times. She said that the service is what makes this hotel so special. Need a blouse ironed in 5 minutes? No problem. Need a doctor at 3 AM? No problem. She also said that there are always fresh flowers in your room and the maid comes in all day long, while you are out, and tidies up. If you go to your room at 4 and throw a wet towel on the floor, it won't be there at 4:15.

I wonder, Linda, if we will be there at the same time? Wouldn't that be funny?

John, my sister, Beverly, and I will be at the Oriental from July 13-21, that is if we finally decide to stay there. (We are also considering the Peninsula.)
It would be nice to meet up, no matter where we stay (since the Peninsula is right across the river from the Oriental). When will you be in Bangkok?

Stayed at the Oriental last year and the service is impeccable. The room that I was in was recently renovated and very nice. Though a bit smaller than i thought, it is nicely equipped and every floor has a butler to tend to your needs.

Yes, it might be a bit up tight and old but afterall, this is the Oriental. If you are into a young hotel or want to flaunt your sandals, then you should consider a younger and more touristy hotel. Afterall, sandals and 5 star hotels/restaurants are never a good match.

I did not stay there but did shop and eat there on two occasions and both times doors were opened for me and I was welcomed warmly. I was dressed in a plain cotton t-shirt, cotton capri pants, and casual sandals, so I am somewhat bewildered to hear that others experienced otherwise. There were others in the lobby wearing shorts when I was there, although I did not see anyone sloppily dressed. The lobby is lovely and the service is impeccable, even if you are not a guest. For example, after doing some shopping I was waiting in the lobby to meet a friend for dinner, and was approached by a porter who invited me to have a seat on one of the sofas, and offered to keep my shopping bags for me during dinner. I did not find it stuffy or pretentious in the least, and I don't suffer those attitudes well. I HIGHLY recommend dinner at their restaurant across the river accompanied by classical Thai dance and music. The food and the performances were memorable.
