ORD to BKK at Christmas time
Has anyone out there booked tickets for the holidays in Bangkok this year? I've checked prices and they are outrageous right now. I'm sure we've not paid this much the last two years we've done this trip. Why are the prices so high this year??? Any tips about prices going down soon? Any ideas? We always buy United economy seats and then get upgrades to business class using ff miles as we have premier executive status.

And can you actually get upgrades to business class at this late date? I'm wondering whether you are being quoted a full economy fare because there aren't any upgradeable lower priced seats available. I always book economy class tickets and use my miles to upgrade, but I always book my tickets 10-11 months in advance. The number of seats they allocate for upgrades is quite small, and the demand at Christmas time is very high.

Forgot to add that I don't think you will see any prices going down at all. All those who delayed trips to Asia are now heading here. Phuket bookings for accommodation are right back to normal and advance bookings for Dec/Jan are high! I would actually try to book your flights as soon as you can before remaining 'cheap seats' are all sold out.

Believe it or not, we have booked late in the past and gotten upgraded seats. The prices weren't through the roof like they are now. But thanks for the advice. I would check Lufthansa, but we like our business class seats! I'm sure we could not get them on LH.
My next step is to call my travel agent tomorrow and see what she can find for us. I've used her in the past, and she has gotten better fares than on the UAL web site more than once!
I'll let you know what I get. We're getting a reservation at Omni Towers. My hubby and son are there right now (opening a new pool room .. you know, 9 ball) and they are very happy with this hotel. What say you, James?

Today my travel agent gave me the sad news that she can't get us any great deals either for ORD to BKK at Christmas time. She's going to keep watching the fares and availability of seats, but it looks like we may not be spending New Years Eve on Phuket or in BKK this year. Shucks!

I'm also a very frequent flier on United. When I want an upgraded seat, I always call the premier exec reservations and work with them on finding dates. It is late for getting a Christmas/New Year flight, but I've sometimes spent an hour on the phone juggling dates to find something that works. More than once I've flown on Xmas Day, as that's when I could get an ungraded seat.

I bought my Dec/Jan tickets to BKK from DTW in April. I thought it might be too early, then, but since I have checked back and seen prices go up and availability go down. I wouldn't wait any longer to buy the tickets.

Thanks everyone, for your responses. I've pretty much resigned myself to the idea that I won't be on Phuket on New Years Eve. Next year I'll have lots more flexibility in my flight dates as I'll be RETIRED!!! My 33rd year of teaching ends on June 4. In the mean time, I will just remember all the fun I've had in Thailand in the past visits and look forward to my next visit.

Congratulations on fortchomming retirement.
Come on, if you are retiring next year and you REALLY wanted to be in Phuket for Next Year why not just 'go for it'!!
Did you check Lufthansa or Air France?
Why not take a look at how much 'over budget' it is going to cost you then have a look around and see if you can save that some way. I bet if you thought about ityou might be able to 'find' that extra by cutting back on something.
Remember how much Chritmas may cost you at home!
It's worth a thought! I reckon you are looking forward to that trip, so why not look around as to where/how you could save that little extra. Air France 777's are real nice Coach, seatback TVs, and imagine just lookinging forward to Phuket during the flight.
You are only 'young' once!
