Okura hotel Bangkok - opinions or alternatives.

I am going to Bangkok for a quick 2 night stop over on my way back from Singapore in September. I have been to BKK many times and find that when I go there on my own I like to stay close to a sky train and in the city as opposed to the river.i like the area around chid lom ( last time I stayed at the renaissance and before that emporium suites a couple of sky train stops away)
Anyhow, I am looking to keep the costs to around £100 per night max and have found a deal on last minute.com for the Okura. Does anyone have any experience of this place? What is the location like? I am also tempted by the Hansar but can't get the price to work at the moment.
Maduzi looks nice too but I can't see that it has any outside space/ pool, which is one of the reasons I am not going back to the Rennaissance. Opinions?

Sorry it's that boring " which hotel in BKK question"

I think MichaelBKK recently posted about this hotel. Do a search.

i think it is part of the japanese chain that has a famous hotel in shanghai which gets good reviews..

you should be able to find most bkk hotels for that price in sept... pook likes kempenski in that area.. four seasons?? hyatt?? marriott mayfair on that fab street nearby..

Bob, believe me I have checked and a lot of them are over that currently. I am really trying to stay within budget as I have slightly extended this trip. Although hadn't checked out Marriot Mayfair so will look at that. Have you stayed there?
Another one I have found is Oriental residences, this looks gorgeous but not sure if the location is just that bit far from the ST.
Thanks Kathie I will do a search.

We considered the Okura (I think it is fairly new) because of its location, and it is different from anywhere we have stayed before. But the online prices were WA-A-A-Y out of my price range. We usually stay at the Chedi in Chiang Mai and the IC in S'pore, so you know what we like. One of these days, however, we will try the Okura. I do like its looks!

The Okura chain is a 5 star Japanese group of hotels with two lovely ones here in Hawaii, The Kahala Hotel(where the Sony Open golf tournament is played) and one on Maui in Kaanapali. I have been in several Okura hotels throughout Japan and have stayed in the Kahala hotel several times over the years as it is only a couple of miles from my home and a very nice area for a retreat. All that said, I have yet to see the Okura in Bangkok but I can assure you that the Okura Hotels are a class operation with service as a priority.

Do you use last minute dot com often? Just wondering as we have our trip this fall well planned but want to leave an option or two open and I had wanted to make a last minute reservation to see what kind of deal I might get(of course I already have cancel able ones). Good luck with your choices, have a wonderful time!

Aloha!

Sandra I have found a FAB rate on last minute.com of £188 for the 2 nights ( I say fab as in not it's normal rate :) ) it doesn't include any extras so am just seeing what other options are out there,
I quite liked the look of Muse too but Pook put me off a little .
If I end up booking it and staying there I'll let you know how we get on.
Where do u normally stay in BKK?

Smeagol Jul 10th, 2012 07:06 AM

HT, many thanks for that info that has really helped.
I have used LM.com on a number of occasion . A few years ago got a mega deal at the plaza athenee about 1 week before I got to BKK. Have used them for hotels home and abroad. I would say give it a shot. Sometimes you just luck out. ( I booked the Hilton at Heathrow the day were due to fly and when I checked in the guy told me it was practically a staff rate!!!)
They do a great " secret hotel " rate but I only book these if I can figure out which hotel it is.

we have stayed there... we love that street with its shops and restaurants.. the pool setting is unique too--no grass but open air overlooking the city..

Smeagol Jul 10th, 2012 09:40 AM

So you would recommend it Bob?

MichaelBKK Jul 11th, 2012 12:31 AM

I was at Muse just a week or so ago. Interesting place, but it is a hike from the train, where the Okura has it's own bridge right to the station. Pool on the 26th floor has a nice view down Sukhumvit to Central World. Have you thought about Centre Point at Terminal 21? It might be in that range.

Smeagol Jul 11th, 2012 06:15 AM

Thanks Michael, will check CP at Term 21 out. I have also been looking at S31 any views on that place? it kind of looks a bit of a way down a sub soi off Suk 31? but fairly good rate off a travel club web I am a member of.

BillT Jul 11th, 2012 01:11 PM

Check the Westin Sukhumvit- not sure if its in your price range but you can't get any closer to the skytrain - its right out the front door!

MichaelBKK Jul 11th, 2012 07:04 PM

S31 is right on the corner of Sukhumvit. It's a short walk from the Prom Phong station. Definitely not on the same level as Okura but probably nice enough. A friend who is a bit more budget minded was just raving about the S33, which is brand new. It's a bit inside of 33, so even though it's probably about the same walking distance to the station. The big selling point is it's a steal for a city-center hotel at around $40.

rhkkmk Jul 11th, 2012 07:23 PM

yes, we have stayed there 2 years ago i think... its not new, just affordable and very nice---but the street is fab

Smeagol Jul 12th, 2012 03:32 AM

At the moment I am thinking of booking S31. Great rate incl breakfast (£120 for the 2 nights) and wifi on their site and just a short walk to the BTS and Emporium and I think some nice restaurants in the area?, they also have an outside pool. I think I will book this ( it's cancelable) and keep watching for any deals with Hansar or Okura.
Thanks everyone.
