I hope Lucy, who was at the Camridge/Boston GTG is safe after reading about the earthquake there and whomever else I haven't met lives there.

After hearing about the quake yesterday morning, I've been checking the board for our intrepid Hawaiian Fodorites. I hope we'll be hearing from some of them soon - once they have electricity!

Ken, glad your family is okay and I hope all of our other friends in Hawaii are fine. All the news reports are saying there were no serious injuries so that's a relief. But as someone who was just recently in a major earthquake, I know how frightening it is and I can empathize with everyone there.

Yes, most Fodorites living and traveling in HI are fine, lots of inconveniences tho, it afffected all 4 islands and some Big Island hotels/resorts sustained structural damage. If you click on US - Earthquake in Hawaii, you will see the postings.

Kuranosuke...Glad your folks are fine in Hawaii. By the looks of some of the structures on the news, it looked like a bullwhip quake as opposed to a rolling one. I was really concerned. Growing up here in L.A., I've been thorugh many and it's never a picnic. Have fun in Singapore and the rest of your trip. Happy Travels!

Thanks everyone for your concern. All of us Hawaii Fodorites seem to have checked in now that we know where K-suke is! Glad you could reach your family Ken!

It was very scary, but once the shaking stopped, the worst part was 17 hours with no electricity, cell telephones or internet access. Sandwiches by candlelight was fun, but after trying to read by the same candles, I gave up and went to bed early.

Airport was a mess, again due to lack of power- they had to hand search luggage, jetways weren't working, even those self-flushing toilets were off and caused many of the restrooms to be closed.

All in all, the damage in many places was significant, but not in ways that will affect most visitors. Some of the big hotels had major damage, but most will just have to close sections.

I've always thought people who live on the big Island are very tough... between lava flows (the natural kind, not the drink!), vog, hurricaines, tsunami, earthquakes, and floods, I don't think I could sleep at night if I owned a home there!

One thing; I'll be restocking my "hurricane box" this week. Having to use it spotlighted how ill-prepared I was for a serious disaster. If you all don't have your flood/earthquake/ tornado/blizzard/etc box up to date, this might be a good time to do so.

Glad you are ok, icuy.

I posted the following site on the US forum but thought anyone could use it as a guide.

Hope everyone is alright.

We have cingular wireless cell phones but it did not work because the electricity was down. Nor did our home phone work because it was not a "land" phone and the electricity was down.
We did not have electricity until 10 p.m. that night. You could hear the people cheer outside when the lights same on.

Had only one radio that worked but it was the type with an ear piece so only one could listen to the radio at a time.

Even if you have emergency items, it would be best to keep them all in the same place and that each family member know where it is. Flashlights are safer than candles.

I've been in rolling earthquakes but never heard about a bullwhip quake until Guenmai explained it. The wooden floor seemed to "bubble and pop" but it did not damage the floor. Another person told me she was sleeping when the earthquake woke her up and she felt like she was in the movie "Exorcist".

Hope all is well,
Aloha

Glad to hear from all the locals and that everythng is ok(Melissa where are you?)

Aloha & Mahalo!!

Thank you all for your concern!!!!!!

Aloha!

aloha.... i am still in san fransisco
area...and missed the earthquake but
Makamae was home on Maui when whe says
Pele made her presence known. the pool sloshed water , the concrete sidewalk around the pool bucked and cracked in 4 places and we had landslides on our rural one lane road.
the road was closed all day sunday and by evening the power was restored.

what an adventure...and i missed it!

Hi Lucy,

Glad to hear that you are OK, so sorry to hear about the earthquake and aftermath that you and fellow Hawaiians have had to endure. I have sent you an email...have you been able to receive it? Hope all is well and thinking of you and yours and everyone else on the islands,

Terry
