Yes, you can probably find an older edition at your library. I keep wondering what the problem is with the new edition - publication has been put off again and again...

I don't get it. How can they already be posting a picture of the cover when it won't be ready for two years?!
|
Because they have done the ads months ago. And have not updated yet. I am in book marketing, and that happens often.
I came back from Siem Reap three weeks ago. Like people have said, it takes at least three full days to explore the temples, the area is vast. And it takes time and some meditation to let the feeling sink into you. I remember well the times when Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge were in the news daily, and I expected it to be poor, so I was not surprised. But it was not depressingly poor, and there were less beggars that in many other places. And I knew there would be land mine victims, so armless and legless people were no surprise or a cause to depress (I am old enough to have lived at a time when half of my home villages men had missing legs, arms and eyes). And there was optimism in the air. While driving around the countryside wirh a taxi I could see that they had started to rebuild in a right way: school, health center, scool health center, school... I like northern Thailand very much, but if I had to choose between Chiand Mai and Angkor, I would choose Angkor. The first time in Bangkok I was on a verge of hating it. It is a town that needs time. The second time I was on a verge of hating to leave it. |
Thanks for all your help Elina. I think we are definitely going to include Angkor. Depending on our beach time, we may skip N. Thailand this time.

"Go to Angkor my friend, to its ruins and to its dreams."
No contest for me on what to choose. I got away from the hotels and walked on my own through Siem Reap and loved it. Didn't find it one drop depressing. Great place & i would love to go back again. |
where is the best place to stay in angor wat? this seems like a trip which would require a lot of physical exertion. has anyone combined vietnam with thailand (for a couple days)?

So glad to see you will include Ankor.
I would suggest that you hire a driver and guide. It is very inexpensive and saves a great deal of time. We spent only 2 nights but arranged our flights so that we could still get up for sunrise over Ankor, a must see. I agree with previous comments limit your travel days. You could do Koh Phi Phi and Railey without wasting a travel day. They are both beautiful islands. From Railey you can take a 20 minute long tail boat into Ao nang, which will give you a larger selection of restaurants or shopping. |
