Northern China Suggestions
 

We may go to China for a two week trip in October. We would fly round trip from
Washington DC to Beijing. We plan on spending about 6 nights in Beijing and two nights in Chende. I would love to have some suggestions of other places in Northern China to
visit, preferably by train. Beautiful scenery and historic towns appeal to us. Any suggestions?

Well, I spent a couple of nights in Datong, train in from Ulaan Baator and out to Beijing. I was there to see the nine dragon screen in town, and the Buddhist caves and Hanging Monastery outside. I also visited some temples in town - rather quiet and quite dusty, but I think it was coal dust from the mines and not neglect. I enjoyed the stop, and the town doesn't seem to be on the main tourist circuit.
