Nightlife in Bangkok?

I'm traveling solo and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend bars/restuarants in BKK where I can meet other travelers without falling into the tourist trap. In other words, I'm NOT looking for a "Senior Frogs" kind of place with a 20's something crowd. And I would like to avoid the horrible chain restaurant/bar scene, but still find a decent nightlife? Any suggestions? Ps. Looking for 30's something crowd, and safe for female traveler. THNX!

How about meeting some locals at the clubs along Sukumvit Road. More fun than just other travelers, a bit more local flavor! Chi at 998 Sukhumvit Soi 55 is very trendy. Zantika at 235/11 Sukhumvit Soi 63 is the coolest.

Thanks, but I'm not really a "club" kind of person. That is if clubs there are similar to the ones in the States?

I'm looking for bars/restuarants types of places.

My husband and I are going there in two weeks, and we have a friend who reccommended a few places to us. Check out: Sirocco, Dome, and Vertigo. All of them are outside and at the top of a large building with amazing views. Vertigo is in the Banyon Tree hotel. I have also read about Bed Supperclub which is supposed to be very cool.

I just started doing the research myself, so I can't tell you more, but hopefully this will give you a good start.

Thanks! If you come across more places let me know. I've read about a few in Lonely Planet, but I guess I need to see them to really tell if they are what I'm looking for.

some of the places people have are ultra-up scale one beer costs more then you guesthouse.

just go too khao san rd. there are many resteraunts some bars where young travalers hang out. it's your best option.

I suspected that..I live in NYC so I've outgrown clubs and lounges...and the prices that are attached!

Thanks!

I love going to Bed Supper Club, but for a real Thai experience I like to go to Tawandang (German brewery) on Rama III road. You won't find any farangs there, usually. Thais go there to eat, drink great beer, dance, see a great stage show, and just have a great time in general.

hombre, i got the info from the bangkokgigguide emailed to me monthly. i get to see whos coming to town, and who i will miss. this month, i will miss michael bulbe.

before you go buy your dancing outfit, i hope noticed that this is a gala, and it is held at the oriental. that should be enough of a hint that this event will cost mucho dineros. you will probably have to give up a months supply of changs to go to this gala.

you will find the night life somewhat different in bkk....you need to seek out where the ex-pats go for hanging out...there are many young professional ex-pats around bkk and they must have their places...

there is one site which i do not honestly remember its name but it is something like "chic" in bangkok which identifies many places...restuarants and bars

six degrees on 42 convent road was one
the metropolitan hotel and its rest. and bars was another
bed supper club was another on soi 11---not sure you would enjoy the restuarant by yourself, but the bar would be fine...
the bar at sirrocco at the corner of silom and new roads in the state building is a possibility...

any of the bars in the big hotels...

w hotel's bar

Here are a couple:

- second the recommendation for Tawandeng - good German beer, tasty pork knuckle, and v. reasonable prices. It's a large place though.
- Saxophone Bar is near Victory Monument. Not really travellers, but local young expats clientele e.g. teachers I'd say. Live music. Relaxed. (Plus seeing the market at Victory Monument at night is fun, and drinking outside there is fun too).
- True British Pub style -> Bulls Head on Sukhumvit Soi 33/1. Loads of Brits there! Slightly older crowd.
- As orgy said, Khao San has PLENTY of nightlife and backpacker travellers.
- Pra Athit Rd is also supposed to have nice cafes and bars for the local students.

have fun

RHKNK lol, you crack me. up.. those arrant young professional ex-pats you see all over the place those are english language teachers.. some of which got there degree from Harvard university, chosen rd branch.... yep many of those fine "young professionals" are backpackers making some money for their next trip or alcoholic, whore chasers who have no other choice then to teach english because of Thailand's very nationalistic labor laws.

rhk you were a white collar worker, and I guess you know that the young guys/gals usually don't get promoted to the coveted international positions that easily.

anyways "the Londoner" is another popular place for ex-pats. I'm not to sure how many conversations baluka may strike up.. most of the guys come with their "girl friend which the hired from nana" or better yet have invited their favorite young long legged student for a drink.
