Night Market vs. Chatuchak Market
#21
I thought the Patpong night market was a hoot. We went there a few years ago and the market hawkers were soliciting me and the hawkers from the sex clubs were soliciting my husband, all at the same time!!
I didn't realize Chatuchak had a new section. I'll have to check it out next time.

Orgy-the SL Night Market was set up by the Thai Govt. specifically to counter the tawdry Patpong market, and give tourists a safe clean family-type atmosphere in which to shop, eat-have someplace to go to at night. I think it has served its purpose very well- I've seen almost as many Thais sitting in the biergartens, walking around, socializing as farangs there, and I have a radar for "too farang" - the SL night market is not.
What I don't know is how much longer it will last, as the grounds are all slated for condo./business development.

the SL market will be converted into the new Japanese and Australian embassies. the market has definitely done is purpose well and I'm a bit upset to see it go.
SL is not "touristy", but is geared more to tourist, when you compare it to jatujak.

the weekend market takes a long time to get around and to see things and find things you want, and much of it YOU DO NOT WANT....SL is smaller and geared to the tourist....if you don't have much time, it is the place for a tourist to go....things are slightly more expensive than you can find them for elsewhere but finding them takes tons of time....its quite large too but nothing in comparison to the w/e mkt...
maybe it will find a new home, but certainly not nearly as central as where it is now...

Just had to add our funny story about Chatuchak. We went last year in Nov and bought a ton of crap, on the way out I told my wife I wanted to see the reptiles they had. We found them and the very first guy I saw had these snakes. I know a lot about snakes and had never seen these kind before. The guy says to me"poison", then "you buy you buy" I told him I live in the US and couldnt get it home. In response he says"put down pants" and goes on to show me how this plastic pop bottle that this venomous snake was in could easily fit down the front of my pants! As soon as my wife saw that she yanked me away so fast I couldnt say a word!
Needless to say we cant wait to get back again this Dec!

I hadn't heard they were tearing down that night market. That's a shame. It was a nice market - as said, sort of touristy, but ok for walking around. I'm not very much into shopping, but markets are fun for walking around, killing time, watching life.
Fwiw, I liked the amulet market a lot for the 'not really shopping' kind of market visit.
