New Years in BKK
 

I will be in Bangkok on New Year's Day - will the weekend market or the night market be open?

all I know is that KANKER and BIG ASS will be playing at big count down celibration all around World trade center..

one thing I recently learned is the New years is actually te day that theys give gifts too eachother NOT CHRISTMass.. my teacher said they do so becouse recieving gifts is a lucky start too the next year..

HMMM the market may be oppen but I dout much of anything will be open..

JJ Market(weekend) market will be open on New Year's day. Some of the shops might be close but the market will be open.

Orgy, we don't give Christmas gifts because most of us Thais are not Christian!

anyways last I checked the new years celibration the thais are celabrating soon is not for the thai calander but the christian calander.. BUT HEY what do I know.

I just gave a call too another thai fraind and word is that yes thais do exchange gifts on (chrestian) new years

I just read that thai new years was just reacently moved too january. Hanuman (or whom ever) can ya tell me what year this happend..

I haven't heard of such a policy from the government and I seriously doubt if any body can move the "Songkran" holiday.

The Thai calendar is loosely based on the Chinese and western calendar for months but the year is based on the Buddhist calendar - hence it will soon be the year 2548!

yep I went too WTP for new years and it was obviously tammed down it seemed like any other friday night.

my sources have informed me that rama 5 changed new years too present date about 150 years ago which historicly speeking is "recently".
