New Hotel Bangkok

For those interested, I just got an e-mail from the Hansar Hotel and they're opening a new guesthouse, named, Maharat, in Old Bangkok on Tuesday, July 12th,2016. Prices start at 1,000 Baht.

Looks great! I just sent an inquiry for our March trip. Thanks for the info. What do you think of the area for a week stay? Easy to get around to the sights?

Guenmai Jul 8th, 2016 12:28 AM

You can taxi or tuk tuk as there's no BTS (skytrain). Taxis are really cheap in Bangkok and start at about the equivalent of a little over $1.00 on the meter when one gets into one.

Forgot to add that there's also the river taxis.

Thanks for the info. Sadly, their email does. It work, so not sure how I'd go about inquiring for a reservation as they didn't respond to the on line form.

Do you have any other suggestions in this price range?

Guenmai Jul 8th, 2016 05:19 PM

They're not opening until July 12th, so maybe the e-mail isn't up and running yet or maybe their internet service is down. It's Bangkok. I'd wait and try again later.

ginger50: It just hit me that you're not leaving until March. What's the big reservation hurry?

ginger, if you want to use the skytrain to get around, I'm afraid this guesthouse is inconvenient. You'd have to take transport to the skytrain station, then take the skytrain. The most convenient transport for you in this area would be the water taxis. There are plenty of guesthouses in this price range in the Sukhumvit area, which would be more convenient for the skytrain.

If you mostly want to do sightseeing, then it might work well - it is close to the Grand Palace/Emerald Buddha, Wat Pho and Wat Arun. But getting a taxi in that area is a real hassle because it is so busy and because taxis want to overcharge in that area, since they figure everyone in "Old Bangkok" is a clueless tourist.

This looks great - almost directly across the river from a place I loved but now beyond my budget. In an area I've never stayed, very tempting, indeed.

Maybe it will be the place for you, MmePerdu. Smiles. The price is certainly right.

Happy Travels!
