New Delhi to Kerala

Hi,

I'm going to be in New Delhi for just under two weeks and am interested in spending some time in Kerala. I just have a few questions;

1. Is 3 days enough for Kerala?if no, how many is needed.

2. Which is the better option; Flight or train from New Delhi

3. average cost of each

1. "Needed"? Travel is not "need", or not for me, travel is "want" and that will be different for different people. I spent weeks in Kerala. This one is entirely up to you and what you enjoy doing.

2. Also up to you. If you haven't traveled on an Indian train, it may be a great deal more interesting than just another flight. If you'd like to spend the time. Neither is innately better.

3. Trains here: http://www.indianrail.gov.in/

Given your time period I advise flying vs. a longer train ride. Indian trains are "interesting" to be sure but so is a root canal. .

Come on, jacketwatch, you know you're glad you did it, if only to have a wise crack at the ready. I cannot imagine going to India and not going 2AC at least once. World-class experience, if not 5 star service.

You've got me there, a good analogy, but one I decided long ago I could live without. How was it? Maybe the biggest difference is the time it takes to have it over with.

Well the smell is like a sock buried in a compost heap for 2 mos. . However if you can get past that the texture is custardy and its very sweet. How something can be so sweet and have such an odor is beyond me. Glad I did it but hereafter I'll take just about anything else. .

I also tried the "unique" civet coffee Kopi Luwak in Bangkok for like $20.00 USD per cup. Yikes! Again glad I did it but I suppose that for that much I was expecting too much maybe. It was bitter and smooth but for a fraction of the price Jamaican Blue Mountain, Hawaiian Kona or actually this coffee from Papua New Guinea which comes from Blue Mountain seedlings is just fine for me.

Cheers, Larry. . BTW you really made me laugh. Thanks!!

Cheers to you both, lol.

To the OP, read this: http://www.seat61.com/India.htm

How long you need depends on what you decide to do. Three days is better than none.

Nice link.

Cheers guys. Later tonight it'll be time to toast you both. A nice, crisp Indian lager, Flying Horse perhaps. .

Are you traveling, Larry?

I'll be responding with a nice Viognier, but not much of it, I'm trying to lose some weight.

I looked up that wine and though I prefer reds my son and especially his fiancé like Sauvignon Blancs so maybe that would be another choice for them.

We leave in about 4.5 weeks for 5 days in Singapore followed by an 11'day SE Asia cruise which we booked like 1.5 yrs. ago. The travel agency we use had a one day sale promo from Princess for their customers only so that included free gratuities and a reduced deposit.

How about you? Any travel plans?

Larry.

I'm a big SB fan, so it may work for them. It's richer and slightly sweeter.

Am working on plans for the fall. Have pretty much decided against eastern Turkey. Likely return to Georgia for the mountains I missed in 2009, then Azerbaijan and some part of Central Asia. Would like to return to Japan, but the sweet One World deal with FF tickets in biz is no more....

It's very sad to see what's happening in Turkey with these crazy bombings. We just love being in Istanbul.

Central Asia sounds so exotic and we just love being in Japan. I hope you can figure out a way to get there. It was so clean and the people were very friendly . We also got to see a Japanese major-league baseball game we also got to see a Japanese major-league baseball game when we were in Tokyo and that is quite an experience even if you don't like baseball. .

It wasn't the bombings - just look at Jakarta, can happen anywhere - more the renewed assault on the Kurds, plus transport difficulties, plus one place I really wanted to see is closed until late September.

Enjoy Singapore and SEA. Looking forward to your TR.

Thank you Larry and Joanna. You both made me laugh.

To the op - are you actually in New Delhi for two weeks on business or pleasure, or are you traveling around the Rajasthan area? There's plenty to do in the New Delhi area if you haven't done that already. If your plans are to visit Kerala, I'd fly given the distance and lack of time.

at least 4 night stay is required to cover a couple of destinations of Kerla i.e Kochi, Munnar & Alleppey (houseboat).

Delhi to Kerala by train? No..Even the fastest train takes at lest 40 hrs. Better take a flight and you will reach Kochi in 3 hrs.

Price: depends on the standard of hotels you are staying in.
