New Casinos in Macau
I'm doing a quick trip to Hong Kong at the end of Feb and wanted to do a day trip over to Macau. While I'm not a gambler, I wanted stop in and see the new casinos Wynn & others have built. I was planning on taking the ferry/hydrofoil over. Is the terminal within walking distance? Are there maps of the city available? Is there anything else I shouldn't miss while there? I was planning just to stay for a couple of hours and wanted to walk around or take public transit. I'm a woman travelling solo, and I assume I should be fine during the day. Any comments, or suggestions are welcome!

Sands is adjacent to the pier, but Wynn, Lisboa and the Galaxy are about 20 minutes walk. There are taxis and free shuttles from the pier.
There is a very nice free map from Macau's tourism office, which should have it at the pier. Very detailed, with all the UNESCO World Heritage sites and brief description. |
I took the ferry to Macau from the terminal at Tsim Sha Tsui. Go to Harbourcity and follow the signs to the ferry terminal. It's on the building on the right (facing harbourcity) or the side that's furthest away from the Star Ferry terminal. From the ferry terminal the Sands is a short 10-15 minutes walk. At the ferry terminal building there is a Macau tourism office where you can get free map of Macau. Should be ok. You could take the taxi or ricksaw to get around although Macau isn't very big you would cover more. |
The pedaled tricycles are not real transportation means. Just for short trips along the the waterfront.
The First Ferry catamarans from Tsimshatsui runs every 30 minutes, takes about 65 minutes. The jetfoil/Tri-cat/Foilcat from Sheung Wan on HK Island runs every 15 minutes and takes about 60. Price is similar. |
Do go take a took at the ruined catherdral and the fort while you are there, and have a meal... there are lots of good restaurants.
