New book about Burma....with link to other boof threads..

If you want to wade through the detritus, there are comments about Asia boofs here:

And here is a new Burma-related book, LITTLE DAUGHTER: A MEMOIR OF SURVIVAL IN BURMA AND THE WEST that may interest a few people here:

Let's add more recommendations here....

Eks,

The final report on the swimming pool at the major hotels in Bangkok. On Saturday the air temperature in Bangkok was around 100.5 F, according to my car computer at approximately 11.00 am. I then proceeded to check the swimming pool temperature at the Penn with a thermometer from my kitchen, we've used it for turkeys and other roasts so it's certified ha, and the pool's temperature was 100 F! I hope this is enough proof that there are no water "chilling" machines at any hotels in Bangkok!

Thanks for the recommendation, eks. I'm going to work on getting all of my Burma books together soon.

oops, excuse me - my Burma boofs...

Would a book about Asia that is reduced to a feature length animated film be known as a boofoon?

marya_ Apr 27th, 2009 01:36 PM

...and would participating in this thread be a form of boofoonerie?

Anyway, is LITTLE DAUGHTER a good first book about Burma for those of us who are wondering where to begin? I'll admit that I looked briefly at THE TROUSER PEOPLE, but either I was just feeling lazy or it isn't the place to begin. I wonder if starting with a different book might be better. Thanks for any thoughts on that.

(If no thoughts, verbal horseplay will do.)

marya, I have a while shelf of books about Burma since I've planned to go there so many times. A couple of good ones to consider: The Glass Palace and The Piano Tuner Hmm... both appear to be in the construction zone s I can't give you authors off the top of my head.

I have not read LITTLE DAUGHTER yet, but I do agree that perhaps TROUSER PEOPLE would not be the best "first" Burma book. But I remember staying up half the night reading it on my Asian trip 2 years ago so it must be at least semi-riveting.

I recently bought LAND OF A THOUSAND EYES and will report on this after I finish.

Boofoon, indeed!

My favorite boof was The River of Lost Footsteps by Thant Myint-U.

I also recommend The Glass Palace by Amitav Ghosh and
From the Land of Green Ghosts by Pascal Khoo Thwe.

Thank you to eks, Kathie, and Craig for some most intriguing recommendations. Still figuring out where to begin as I finish the book that an acquaintance said would explain Uganda to me (ABYSSINIAN CHRONICLES). Please report back on LITTLE DAUGHTER, eks.

I appreciate the additonal recommendations for boofs on/in Burma. The two out of these that I don't yet have are Little Daughter and Land of a Thousand Eyes.
