Thought I'd pass this info on about the long awaited new airport:

Thailand's new Suvarnabhumi Airport will be open for international flights on Sept. 28, replacing the 90-year-old Don Muang Airport. The new airport (pronounced "su-wan-na-poom") is in Bangkok. The new multi-million dollar international airport will surpass the terminal size of Hong Kong International Airport, making it the largest terminal building in the world. Initially, Suvarnabhumi Airport will handle up to 45 million passengers annually, based on two parallel runways with a total capacity of 76 flights per hour. Upon full completion, it will have four runways and passenger terminals capable of handling 100 million movements a year. The airport will easily accommodate the Airbus A380 aircraft, the world's largest aircraft. A 600-room Novotel hotel on the airport property will officially open for overnight guest stays on Sept. 28. Reservations are now being accepted.

i ahve a problem with the # of movements planned at the new airprt....are the toilets free??

When I went to Singapore a couple weeks ago on SQ (soo much nicer than Thai!), they had a pamphlet already printed about the new airport at the check-in counter. Although the information about taxis is now outdated, there's a surprising amount of detail about using the airport for SQ passengers, eg.

Use door no. 5 to get to check-in row K.

Turn left after passport control to get to the gates.

Star Alliance will be at gates C1 to C10 & D1 to D4.

The distance from the check-in counter to the furthest gate (C10) is 850 meters.

Lounges are on level 3 (departures on level 4). There are three Star Alliance lounges in all.

Star Alliance baggage arrives on belts 8 to 15.

Don't know if this info is what's in the sites of the two previous messages,but here's something I just read:

Improved ground transportation options to and from the new airport makes traveling the approximately 15 miles into Bangkok as convenient as possible. The new and improved ground transportation options include a free 24 hours/7 days per week shuttle bus service into Bangkok. These ground transportation options are all located at the Transportation Center in the airport. Said Chotisak Asapaviriya, president of Airport of Thailand (AOT) "It should now take less than 30 minutes to go by car between Bangkok and the airport, as the airport is just fifteen miles east of the city, and with a 10-lane super highway, we can boast of having a modern highway connection with direct access between the city and the airport." In addition, the eight-lane Burabha Withee expressway provides travelers the option to enter the airport entrance from the opposite direction. Future plans include the completion of a state-of-the art light rail system that will connect the new airport into the center of Bangkok. The new Airport Rail Link will feature a direct express train that will take 15 minutes between the Makkasan train station and the airport. that is good news...lets see if it all works....

Also according to the article below many more taxis will be allowed at the airport and those droping off passengers will be allowed to pick up. But the airport fee may increase from 50 baht to 100.

Train is ages and ages away........

There is a very extensive article on www.asia-city.com I don't know if this has been referenced before.

I'm gonna miss ol' Don Muang, but it he is tired and needs retirement! I have the memories of my first trip there. I always felt so sorry for those Thai people giving massages to tourists in that dark depressing room on the way to the departure gates for home.

Looks like Don Muang airport will be re-opened some time in March for non-connecting domestic flights to ease congestion at Suvarnabhumi.

So far Thai Airways (domestic flights), One-Two-Go and Nok Air have expressed their desire to move back to Don Muang.
