How does this differ from what we get now?

You mean BEFORE?
Before if you entered Thailand by land you only got a 15 day stamp.

G7 countries.

This give tourists who use land entry points a little more breathing room than the old free 15 days Visa Exemption allowance.

So you an get a visa stamp for 30 days and extend for 60 internally? So the visa runs need to happen every 90 days?

It's not a visa - it's a visa emption. So I don't know about any extension you can get inside the country.
