need your help with japan itinerary

hello,

Me & my family are travelling to Japan to experience autumn foliage colour. We are getting into japan on 20th October 2018 & leaving tokyo on 4th November 2018. We like nature away from crowds. We dont mind trekking & walking to explore. We plan to cover the hokkaido & tohoku region & return to Tokyo.

I need your experience & knowledge in stitching together an itinerary, to see the best fall colours. We dont have specific location preferences for spending the night.

I have listed some places we would like to cover

Daisetsuzan National Park
Shiretoko Five Lakes
Oirase Stream
lake chuzenji

Thanks,
Shraman

I recommend flying into MMB and renting a car to go to Shiretoko, Lake Akan and Daisetsuzan (and Sounkyo Gorge, if you have time). You can take the train to Oirase stream, but from what I've been told, that area is super crowded, so you might want to look at alternatives (we went to Naruko Onsen/Naruko Gorge).

We were in Hokkaido about ten days earlier than you will and the leaves were turning, but it was overcast and rainy for much of our time there.

Should be a great trip! If you haven’t already done so, you might find some very helpful information on japan-guide.com and jnto.go.jp/eng/

While visiting Lake Chuzenji, you might consider a side trip to Kegon-no-Taki, or maybe even as far as Nikko.

Enjoy!

@internetwiz
Thank you! It is great to know we can expect fall colour during that time. I have included Naruko & sounkyo gorge to our list. we are planing to fly out to MMB on the first day, stay in hokkaido region for few days. Then travel out to tohoku/tokyo & cover the region & then fly out of japan from tokyo. Could you please suggest on how to split the number of days in hokkaido & tohoku, tokyo region. If you would have a rough plan it would be great! we plan to cover the places using a rental car, it allows us to improvise a lot.

@kja Thank you! i have been referring japan-guide.com but did not check jnto. the website looks really helpful i will browse through it. we want to cover the area above tokyo with great fall colour. as the timelines of our trip coincides with the peak fall colours in the region. we have around 15 days with us & want to come up with the best possible plan. i have included kegon & ryuzu waterfalls.

You could miss the best of the colors according to your schedule.
You might check these typical display periods:
