Need to find a golf course in Kuala Lumpur
 

(I incorrectly tagged this so am posting again under Malaysia this time!)

I will be in KL at the end of November/beginning December for a conference and would like to take my husband golfing for a day so need some help finding a golf course, please.

I'd rather not go to a super-fancy place where they have dress codes and strict regulations as he's used to playing in a more casual environment. We also need a place where we can rent clubs as we live in Cambodia and don't have our equipment with us.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I would suggest you contact your hotel and ask them for help on this. They may even have access to a local club. They would also know the closest public course, and whether local private clubs allow foreigners to play. In Hong Kong, for example, a non-resident can play on weekdays by just showing a passport (and of course paying greens fees); this includes tony private clubs like the Deep Water Bay Club. I don’t know if someplace like the Selangor Club would have something similar. Also in Hong Kong, the public courses get booked up weeks in advance, which is why I would suggest you start with your hotel for assistance.

We are not staying in a hotel so don't have anyone to ask...any other ideas?

I see from your other post that you were considering a night at a hotel in KL like the Club at the Saujana or the Carcosa Seri Negari Casa. Is that no longer happening? If so, then contact them for golf advice. Just because you may not be staying there when your husband wants to golf does not mean they wouldn’t help with this request.

I looked at the website for the Royal Selangor Club, and it seems they allow visitors to play, see http://www.rsgc.com.my/Golf-Golf%20Services.htm#Booking Proceduer Guests & Visitors or just http://www.rsgc.com.my/ and click on “golf” then “Booking, Fees”. Play is weekdays only and excludes public holidays. You seem to have to book through a hotel, but it may be possible to just send them a fax and book directly. Certainly could not hurt to try. This club has an easy location right in KL. Other clubs may offer similar access by visitors, you would need to check websites. I believe Hanuman has given you a link to several golf courses. You might also look in the Putra Jaya area, which may have more clubs.

I assume if you are staying with friends in KL you have already asked them. I assume you have asked people in Cambodia who may have travelled to KL previously.

As with many golf clubs in Asia, you may need to present a handicap card to be able to play. So be sure your husband has one with him. Not sure about renting clubs, esp if your husband is tall, as most Malaysians are not, so finding clubs in his size may take some searching.

Most golf clubs(adult men, women, children etc) are standard sizes unless they are custom made. Golf shoes on the other hand might be hard to rent if the OP's hubby is a size 14 or something like that.

We are no longer staying in a "nice" hotel as we are both volunteers living in Cambodia and our organization is putting us up in a guesthouse during the conference...not sure if they have golfing contacts..
We will also be needing somewhere on a weekend (not weekday)..And my husband never had a handicap card so things are not looking good...(he has played for 40 years but only as a casual golfer, hence we're not really keen on playing somewhere too upscale).

Do try the guesthouse, they may know of public courses in the area. Those are likely to be less formal than private clubs and should not require a handicap.

You can get a handicap card through the US Golf Association, see http://www.usga.org/handicapping/get...ng-A-Handicap/. In fact you could write to the Cambodian Golf Federation at http://www.cambodiangolf-federation.com/, and I am sure they can assist you in getting a handicap card (you may have to join the federation, but this could be an interesting group). Membership may also give you privileges at KL courses.

He could try driving ranges too, see http://www.setapakgolf.com/ or http://www.citygolf.com.my/, or do a Google search (that is where I found those). Some of those places have simulated courses, not quite the same as outdoors but may be fun (you can pick your course, like the Old Course at St Andrews…). The Club at the Saujana has a driving range.

http://www.seriselangor.com.my/compo...page/Itemid,1/ is a public golf course, no handicap certificate required - you just need to book your tee-off time for weekends. They have a special rate of 105 RM for Sunday afternoons, including green fees, buggy, tax and insurance.

In KL I think it's important to go to a course near your guest house as getting a taxi can be a bit of a nightmare, especially on the way back.

I've reciprocal membership at Royal Selangor but unfortunately I'm not in town at that time.

There are a lot of courses that allow visitors but most likely in the afternoon especially Sunday

Handicap card should not be an issue, I've never been asked in KL, also you may want to try night golf, there are a few courses that have 9 holes floodlit, once again it depends where you are staying
