Need some tips about safe travelling in India for women.

Hi there, my girl-cousin who lives in Canada wants to travel to India alone, despite my pleas to the contrary. Can anyone suggest any safety precautions she should take? I'm very disturbed by reports of crimes against women in India.

Thanks donatello for such a quick response, thanks a lot man. I will do consider with my family about what the article you've suggested. This might work. Doing something is better than doing nothing. Will definitely put this info through my cousin's ears.

I (older female) have traveled solo in India twice, for ten weeks back in 2001, and for six weeks in 2010, much of the time by train. However, with the recent reports on violence I am having serious doubts about doing so again. My advice would be to dress conservatively, if not in shalwar kameez, to stay in business or mid-priced hotels, and to be off the streets before it gets really late. Don't take food or drink from strangers and don't ride commuter trains (long distance is fine) or overnight buses (actually, advice has always been to be off the roads after dark, regardless of sex).

This website has some good advice although most of it is common sense really.

My advice to a female relative would be not to go to India until it cleans up its act with regard to attitudes to women.

I'm also female and traveled solo to India many times--but often stay at YWCAs & travel in train compartments for women (when available) & speak some Hindi. I've also hit/pinched a few men with wandering hands.
Here's a useful link for your cousin to look at: http://wanderlustandlipstick.com/201...men-travelers/
