Need help with itinerary for two months in India

We will be in Delhi from Feb. 15-April 16 2014. We are interested in: Ellora and Ajanta Caves in Aurangabad. Agra (briefly) Varanasi, Khajuraho, Jaipur, Pushkar, Jodhphur,Jaisalmer, Udaipur. If we have enough time, we might want to go to one other spot such as Shimla, Daramsala, Sikkim, or Darjeeling. We do not usually spend much time in large cities. We love trains, landscapes, architecture and culture. Can you recommend a route, other special places we haven't thought of and an idea of what is reasonable in two months? We don't like large hotels because we prefer to interact with other travelers and we stay in budget or mid priced hostels.

Are you asking about a two month tour, or a collection of overnight trips based in Delhi?

Do you want to travel by train, private car, plane or a mix? For loads of info on train travel in India see http://www.seat61.com/India.htm

If you look at a map and are doing a tour the sequence should be obvious.

Two months are enough time to visit all the places you want. India is a big country and the places you have mentioned few are in East of Delhi, Few in west and few places in central and northern India.
When you are in Delhi you can plan the following sequence
Delhi> Agra> Jaipur> Pushkar> Udaipur> Jodhpur> Jaisalmer> Delhi> Dharamshala> Shimla> Delhi> Varanasi> Darjeeling> Sikkim> New Jaslpaiguri> Varanasi> Khajuraho> Mumbai> Aurangabad Delhi.
You can not cover allthe places by train atvplqces you need to take flight and at places it is covinient to tour by hiring vsb.

My assumption is that you mean you will fly in and out of Delhi on those dates. A year and a half ago we flew in and out of Delhi from about Feb. 20 to April 2, so we had 6 weeks. By mid-March we headed up into the foothills of the Himalayas because the heat was starting to build in Rajasthan. The day we flew home out of Delhi it was over 100 degrees. I think you might want to keep weather concerns in mind as you plan your trip.

Orchha is very close to Khajuraho, and we much preferred it to Khajuraho. You may also want to consider Haridwar another holy city on the Ganges as a compliment to Varanasi (another of our real favorites). Be sure to get to Jaisalmer; we really liked it, and you can take an overnight train to get there.

For people who typically don't like big cities, you have an awful lot of city time on your list. We spent most of our time in the lesser visited places in more rural India in some fascinating places. Here is the link to my trip report that talks about a number of places you haven't thought of. It also lists where we stayed. We are also moderate range travelers who prefer unique lodging over the standard big hotels.
