Are there national holidays in Japan during the 22nd & 24th of September.

Sep 23rd is Keiro-no-Hi, the Day to "Respect the Old" (literally) and it's a public holiday.

Is there also something called the "Golden Week". Great... the Day to "Respect the Old", I love that. My concern was of the crowds that a public holiday attracts to historic sites. Will be in
Kyoto for those dates & want to be prepared.

The Golden Week is ... NOW. From the end of April through to the first week of May. Yes, prepare for crowd and perhaps higher hotel rates too. Good luck.

Respect for the Aged Day is the third Monday in September, this year, September 17. September 23 is the Autumnal Equinox. On these holidays, banks and most ATM machines are closed (though ATM machines in shopping centers and big post offices remain open), schools are closed and most companies are closed. As far as tourists are concerned, business as usual. Everything is open, even museums that are usually closed on Mondays will be open on the holiday and closed on Tuesday. Restaurants and shops, all open. Things will be a bit more crowded, though not much as it's a weekend anyway, and not yet time for falll foliage. Hotel prices generally are a bit higher on the eve of any holiday.

autumn equinox holiday - Oh, Shubun-no-hi. Sorry, Respect for the Aged used to be 15th SEP, then. As Kim said, I have just dicovered since 2001, RFA falls on 3rd Monday of September so it can change each year and not fixed 15th SEP anymore.
