Narita Airport (Tokyo)

Has anyone been around the town of Narita. We have a whole day to kill while changing planes from Bankok and was wondering just how big this place was and was there anything worth seeing instead of hanging around the airport?

Haven't spent a lot of time there, but I was there for part of an afternoon. You can easily spend a couple of hours or more wandering around the Narita-san Temple, which from what I have read is one of the most visited in Japan. It is dedicated to Fuoko, the Fire God, if I remember correctly. I have found something on the web before on it, so you may wish to check. I have walked some of the streets around the temple too. There are some interesting shops, tiny streets, and you may learn first hand about the abundance of vending machines in Japan. The temple can be reached quickly from the airport by either taxi or train. If you have never been to a country where they drive on the left, it is quite interesting to take a taxi.

I guess you could even go into Tokyo, but it is a tremendously large city, and it would involve quite a bit of train travel.

Yes, go to the town of Narita--it's charming, relatively close to the airport (there are buses that regularly and conveniently go back and forth). There's much to see by sauntering the streets, taking in a tea ceremony, having lunch, visiting the Shinto temple and more, depending on how much time you have. Even if you have only 4-5 hours, it's very worth while.
