Nainital/Ranikhet/Haridwar/Himalaya area of India

Which of these towns/areas is the most interesting and why? Can you recommend any places to stay that have a view of the Himalaya? What peaks of the Himalaya are visible from this area? How will the visibility be in early November on average?

The hill station of Nainital is a pretty town with a beautiful lake, however we did not see any Himalayan Peaks when we visited in March 2006. For spectacular views of the Annapurna Himalayas consider Pokhara in Nepal or for Kangchendzonga, the 3rd highest mountain in the world, check out Pelling in Sikkim. Sikkim is far more interesting than Almora & Nainital, imho. Haven't travelled to Haridwar. Will be there next month! Have fun!

Sorry, forgot to say that Pokhara in Nepal often enjoys perfect weather in November. We saw the Himalaya many times early November. Weather is cool & fine but of course the clouds can obscure the mountains in a heartbeat!

Nainital - pleasant; Hardiwar - interesting. But they are a long way from the peaks, and are the sort of places you go when you have loads of time (months), or want to take the road less travelled. Or want to visit Corbett NP.

Sikkim is a great suggestion - or have you though about Darjeeling? Amazing place especially if you take the train to get there. In November, which is the BEST TIME TO BE THERE, you might very well be able to see Kanchenjunga from a well placed hotel.

We've been to Nepal and Sikkim and Darjeeling are part of another trip. Thanks for your responses so far, though.

Hi. Don't miss Kalimpong if you're off to Sikkim. Check out www.holumba.com. The family who run this beautiful place have lovely cottages for rent. They also serve top quality cuisine. We preferred Kalimpong to Darjeeling for the tranquility & magic views of the mountains. Nordern, the son of the owner of Holumba is a terrific source of information on the history of the area. Fab place to chill-out & relax!
