Myanmar--will customs take my cell phone?
 

I know I will not be able to use my cell phone in Myanmar, but I would like to take it with me to use later in India. A poster on LP said that the Myanmar embassy in Rome said that Myanmar customs would take it upon arrival and return it to me upon departure from the country (fat chance!) I called Myanmar embassy in DC and they said it would not be taken away. I don't know who to believe. Anyone have first-hand experience with this?

when i arrived at yangon airport there was no luggage search or anything of the kind and no talk will officials either.... quite honestly it is a bit of chaos when a flight arrives...it is routine....keep you cell in your purse, turned off and silenced and make no mention of it...you should have no problem...

My husband and I just got back from Myanmar- Yangon,Pagan, Napali beach and Bangkok. I fell in love with the place Myanmar. We took our cell phones and like Bob mentioned don't say anything and you will be fine. We had no plan of going to Myanmar and everything was booked at last minute in Yangoon travel agency. The travel agency did a wonderful job getting us a flight from Yangon to Pagan and the Napali beach in the same day that we arrived in Yangon. Oh my, I missed the bunglow right on the Nagpali beach listening to the waves, quiet and secluded. We had a huge lobster for $6 at the Nagpali restaurant called Excellent. If you are interested, I will give out the travel agency contact name.

Thank you rhkkmk and clear. I will take the phone and see what happens--hopefully, nothing. Yes, clear, I would like the name of the agency you used. We travel with NO advance reservations--just go with the flow. I love the freedom of not being confined to a schedule.

There is a new beach resort called Treasure beach resort. It is on Ngwe Saung Beach ( new development). My friend was there and she said the place/resort is beautiful & you will have the whole beach to yourself. I'm looking at the brochure now and it has 39 deluxe bunglow & 24 superior building rooms. Bunglow room has teak floor, four poster bed and netting. Boat excursion can be arranged. You cannot fly to Ngwe Saung. You can only access by driving/car, which will be about 5 hours each way. We did not have enough time so we chose Ngapali. If you're interested, please ask Beau Beau. He can arrange a private car/driver (of course nice well maintained car). We are planning to go to Treasure Beach resort next time when we are in Myanmar.

My travel agent told me beforehand that my mobile would be confiscated upon arrival, but I took it anyway, and nothing happened. I took 8 flights in which they had the chance to take it from me, they never bothered.
There are several nice beach resorts in Ngapali, where it is worthwile to chill out after a long and tiring trip through the country. You'll need it and you'll enjoy it. Chear mentions one, I mention another one in my trip report.
