We visited Burma with ?The Road to Mandalay?. It is a converted Rhine river cruiser and travels between Mandalay and Bagan.

The cruise is operated by the same company that operates the Asian Orient Express and is of similar standard. A search will find their web site.

We started with two days in Rangoon with a car and guide provided and accommodation at the Pansea, a very nice boutique hotel.

Then we flew to Bagan and joined the boat. In all we had four nights on board with entertainment provided as well as tours, including tours around Mandalay.

We elected to have an additional two days in Mandalay for which a guide and car were also provided. We spent one day at an old Hill Station above Mandalay.

If you email me at [email protected] I will be happy to send you a copy of my diary.

We booked our holiday with Diethelm Travel over the internet..they were fantastic. Everything was waiting for us at our hotel when we arrived in Bangkok. We had private guides in Rangoon, Bagan and in Mandalay. We sailed from Bagan to Mandalay on the Pandau riverboat. It was lovely, more casual and much less expensive than Orient Express. We had 2 village stops along the way. Truly one of the best trips we have ever taken.

Hello Norv,

Thank you for your reply --- we will look into the tour company.

I was wondering when you took your trip?

We travelled to Cambodia (4 days) late January 2003 and Burma the first week of February.

We are booked on a trip to Myanmar Jan. 2004 with Asia Transpacific Journeys. We used them for our trip to Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia and they were sensational. Our trip leaves the U.S. on January 23, arrives in Bangkok on the 24th and we leave for Yangon on the 25th. It's 17 days. The next day we fly to Mandalay, stay for two days and then board a river boat with an overnight stay to take us to Bagan. Three days in Bagan, then fly to Shan State and explore Pindaya. Then drive to Inle Lake, stay there a couple of days, fly back to Yangon, stay overnight and fly back to Bangkok. Group is limited to 15 people. Let me know if you need any more information.
