My trip to BKK Oct 30 ...Should I go
 

I know none of you can predict the future....But based on your experience living there do you think I should chance it? My trip is only 3 days in BKK and 10 days in japan after. We were so looking forward to BKK as my mom has never been but I will have to deal with changing hotel reservations soon to avoid cancellation charges. If I was going tomorrow would the roads be blocked from the airport into the city?

Any advice?

We'll be in Bangkok before you and we wouldn't consider canceling. There has been no talk of roads to/from the airport being blocked. There has been talk about demonstrators going to Don Muang to protest at the new office space of the PM. Don Muang is the old airport and some domestic flights use it. You'll fly in and out of the new airport.

Personally, I wouldn't cancel. I've been there when worse was going on and didn't leave the city or anything. I remember the year of the bombings, New Year's Eve, Dec 2006, and the western news was making it sound like all New Year's Eve celebrations had been cancelled. Well, as they were reporting that, I was standing on the terrace of my serviced apartment, watching the fireworks go off. Happy Travels!

Avoid the areas where there are protests and those areas are, so far, confined to the city administrative area. Unless things escalate you will most likely not see any sign of the unrest especially the areas where most of the tourist go to.

go and enjoy---you will never know anything is wrong....none of the problems are in areas where you would spend any time...

What are the areas to avoid? We're going there in less than a weeek and just heard on the news that the protest is worse than what it was a month ago....

Keep your reservations. Thai issues seem to blow over pretty quickly.
