And MP, I packed my tripod in my checked suitcase, reluctantly, as it's valuable, but I didn't want to chance any hassles with airport security. But I carried on my ballhead, as that would have been an even greater loss had it disappeared from my luggage.

That's my plan (ballhead with me, tripod in suitcase). I did call the airlines and was told I could bring it on, but she may have thought it was a tripod for a pocket camera.
I'm going to call my insurance company to see if I need a rider for all my things.
Back to packing!
