I previously posted a link that included these photos. But recently, a photography group of which I'm a member asked me to turn some of my China photos into an article for its website. So I thought I'd share it with my fellow Fodorites, thanks for looking :)

And your story of the how steep the Great Wall is ... it was a surprise to us as well. My wife will be happy to hear that someone else was on all fours.

Seeing them again feels almost like dining/chatting with you in Shanghai again, the expanded narrative is fabulous.

Nutella is a gifted person, she is gracious and sensitive, immerses herself in the culture and the people, that's how she's able to capture the essence of China and its people.

as usual i had a bit of a problem....at 50 i started digging that hole and my compass mis-fired and i ended up in bangkok....so in fact it works---start digging today

Monica, if there was one thing I could change about my trip, I'd have brought less photo gear. The tripod would have stayed home, and I'd have brought a versatile lens rather than changing all the time. So when you said "all" your gear, it made me kinda nervous!

Rhk- I googled the opposite point on earth ("antipode") and if I continued digging I would have ended up in the middle of the ocean off the coast of western Australia. Good thing I gave up and took a plane instead! I think that only South American children with strong digging ability will end up in China :)

Hi Nutella,

I have 3 lenses. One of them I don't think I would use much, so I might leave it at home (it's from my film days, a 28-300mm). The other two are my Nikon 35-70mm F/2.8 and Tokina 12-24 f/4(I have the Nikon D80), which I can see the need for both.

I recently bought a carbon fiber tripod and with the ballhead it weighs about 3.5 pounds. I'm thinking of using it for the great wall and night shots. For the price I paid, I don't want to leave it sitting at home. I'm sure I'll regret the extra weight I have to carry but who knows when I'll return to China. I'm thinking the wide lens would be good for the forbidden city (and any other wide angle shots) and the 35-70 for the remainder of them.

I considered purchasing the 18-200 VR lens, but since I have 3 others, I can't see myself buying it (at least not now).

What kind of camera bag do you have? I have a lowepro but I'm looking for one that's more of a camera bag and backpack in one package. My lowepro is so stiff and there's not much room for other items (such as my guide book, water bottle, etc).

I'll let you know how I felt with all my equipment when I return!

M - I have a Natl Geographic backpack (medium sized version) that I like a lot. It has a compartment for a small laptop, a padded section for camera and lenses, and the top part that fits a lot of misc stuff. And a lot of pockets and places for tying thing on. Actually I left it home on this trip because I ran out of room, but I wish I had brought it.

Thanks Nutella, I'll check it out. The one I'm looking at seems to be a nice combination camera bag and travel bag. Is yours suitable to strap on a tripod? Mine folds to about 18".

M - Yes, a tripod can be lashed on to the bottom using the straps provided, and I've also seen photos where it's attached to one side of the backpack.
