It always puzzles me as to why so many regulars on this forum do not visit the Philippines. Everyone speaks English, dollar goes a long way, interesting historical sights, great beaches, and they love Americans!

It's all true Bill. Plus, it's a great place to hop off to Vietnam, Cambodia and so much more. Great stuff to be seen! Sadly the PHL has a reputation that precedes it, I'd guess that some people are "scared" to visit.

I was in the Philippines for my time in the Peace Corps back in the early 60s. What I remember was the humidity, the friendly people, learning Tagalog and Cebuano, the carabao.

I'm sure things have changed greatly but I did enjoy your pictures.

The problem is that when the schools here in Germany close for the summer holidays it's August and in August the weather is very bad in the Philippines.

The other school holiday periods only last two weeks - too little for such a distant destination.

Then I think that there is a dearth of direct flights from Europe, while there are many direct flights to Thailand for instance.

I also remember some lady told me a few years ago that travelling in the Philippines is a bit complicated, probably because you have to catch a flight for every transfer.

Yes those are some of the reasons. Others are that the Philippines does not do a good job with its tourism infrastructure. It has many of the same natural wonders as other countries in that region but does not invest in developing and marketing its assets for tourism. There is also way too much corruption which is so systemic that I'm afraid there is little hope for it ever changing. The model to look at is Thailand- which does everything well. Even when you look at exports Thailand beats the Philippines hands down.
The reason is that many people there move to the cities from the provinces and/or leave for the US, so its agricultural base is shrinking.
