Mt Fuji Accommodation options

I'm travelling to the Mt Fuji area in early October and was hoping to know more about accommodation options around the Fujiyoshida area.

As it is October my partner and I are unlikely to attempt to climb Fuji, but we'd still like to visit the area for a few days. The only thing we have planned is Fuji Q amusement park at this stage but would be keen to do some hikes, onsens etc. My question is, is it better to stay in Fujiyoshida or to stay near the lakes?

Unless things have changed the Mt Fuji hiking season is from July to early September. Climbing outside the season requires special permits. 5th station is however open most of the year.
