It seems too complecated to me to make Hakone as a stop on your way from Tokyo to Kyoto on the same day. I guess you can't stay overnight in Hakone? I saw Fuji-san from Shinkansen train a couple of times when the sky was clear.

Do you just want to see or it get near it??

You can drive up to some of the parking lots but you can only go so far depending upon the time of year. At least we could back in 1992.

My parents lived a bit away but could look out their window and see Fuji. But now they are living on the Tokyo Bay this tour of duty.

My brother currently lives at Camp Fuji and I could ask him.

Are you driving or taking the train?
Last year, we took our first trip to Japan and saw Mt. Fuji from the Shinkansen on our way from Tokyo to Kyoto. We also saw it from our Tokyo hotel room. We were there the last week of April and the first week of May (Golden Week). We saw cherry blossoms and Mt. Fuji so that made our trip very special.

It all depends on the time of year you are there as to when you can see Fuji-san. If you are going in the summer, the heat and humidity clouds up Fuji and thus restricts visibility, This would be a good thing to know before you take a side trip

I am a Japanese living in Nagoya and was surprised every one gave correct response. It's true stopping at Hakone takes one more day. You can enjoy Mt. Fuji from Shinkansen if you take a seat on E rows (mountain side). When you buy a ticket, tell them you want to see Mt. Fuji. Also, as Marywhitcomb wrote, Mt. Fuji is very often covered with clouds even in a fair weather. If you hope to see Mt. Fuji, winter mornings are the best. In the afternoons, she wil usually hde away.
