Mount Davis Youth Hostel in Hong Kong

Anyone stayed at the Mount Davis Youth Hostel on top Mount Davis (in Kennedy Town) on Hong Kong Island?

They advertise only 50-80 Hong Kong dollars for a night in their dorms. The views seem really good too and they have a shuttle service from the local MTR to the top at various times in the day.

Anyone recommend them?

youth hostels in hong kong tend to cater for hikers, campers and such, not particularly for tourists. i haven't stayed there before but if you come here for a couple of days for city stuff, i don't think it's really worth the effort to commute from there.

I'd suggest spending a little more and stay at something like the YWCA Anne Black House. They have standard room with communal bath for $280-350 in September.

It's not the most convenient, but still only about 15 minutes walk to Mong Kok or Yau Ma Tei MTR, or a 3 minute bus ride. I've stayed there and it's pretty decent.

Fascinating - you are interested in a place at 50-80 HKD and rkkwan recommends an alternative at five times the price.

But to answer your question - yes, I have stayed there. It is a long way out of town but there is the shuttle, as you say. Thing is, it is a long way up - so unless you like hill walking you do need to time your trips to connect with the shuttle to get home. But going out you can walk downhill and catch a bus - easy peasy.

I loved the place - tons better than Miramar Mansions (the expert, rkkwan, may care to comment but I doubt it).

It is (was) an old style YHA where visitors are expected to do a chore or two. And the dorms are large. Upside is the amazing terrace to sit high above the entrance to Hong Kong Harbour.

Look - that terrace was worth the small inconvenience of not being in the city centre.

If you are happy to sightsee during the day and return to the hostel at night with nibbles and a bottle of wine - then you will probably have a great time. I only say probably cos I was there in 1997 - and, as I said - all things must pass, all thing must fade away.

If you have an ounce of adventure in your body - do go - because it is cheap; because it is a good place; because if it is not supported then it will die - and then there really will be only the chain hotels, and the Miramar Mansions.

Good point by fuzzylogic about me recommending something 5x the cost! :)

Anyways, if one wants cheap, I doubt you can find anything as clean and safe on Hong Kong Island for that price.

Just dropping in again to add the following:

The journey on the free shuttle takes about 20-30 mins depending on the traffic.

I was in HK for five days so it was OK for me to spend that time travelling and to have that kind of inconvenience.

If you are only there for one or two nights then only you can decide about the time versus money equation.

I did meet some great people there - which is another plus.

Well I have stayed there too! Like Fuzzy I was in HK for 5 or so days. Did not find the trip out the the Hostel a hassle at all because I thought the location was just beautiful.I found it nice to be a bit out of town for fresh air mornings & evenings. Great views and sunsets.
