more time in Nepal or Tibet?

I am planning my upcoming trip to Nepal and Tibet in May. I only have 3 weeks, and definitely plan to spent time in the Kathmandu valley and Last Resort (rafting, canyoning, etc.) and possibly Chitwan and Pokhara.

I am also trying to get to Tibet, but don't know if I should do a quick 4 or 5 day fly in fly out Lhasa trip or fly one direction and drive the other. If I drive one direction, I would have to cut out either Pokhara or Chitwan (or both).

As for Chitwan, I've been on an elephant several times throughout Asia, so didn't know if there was anything there I haven't seen before.

Any strong preferences from other Fodorites on whether I should spent more time driving to Lhasa or more time in Nepal?

Have you already taken your trip?

Where you should spend time really depends what you're interested in.

Travel in Nepal is less expensive and less restricted than travel in Tibet. It has great hiking, all sorts of cultural sites, and even parts that are quite similar to Tibet (up near the border, like Mustang and the Everest area).

On the other hand, Tibet is unique and is also an incredible place to visit. Spend at least 5 days there if possible. If you enter from Nepal, your travel agent will apply for a special visa for you that will not last more than 21 days in China and cannot be extended.

Another option is to spend time in Nepal, fly to Chengdu and then tour the Tibetan areas in Sichuan. It's cheaper than travel in the Tibet Autonomous Region and just as, if not more, authentic. You'll need some language books so you can point out what you'll need in Tibetan or Chinese, unless you speak the languages.

Another popular option: Go to Lhasa, then take a trip to the Nepal border, cross over, go to Kathmandu and then explore Nepal. Easier to arrange then going the other way round.
