Money in Tokyo
Am going in a couple of weeks and am concerned about getting money, particularly from ATMs. Will be staying at Hilton. Know of any post office or other source fairly close?

There are post office atm machines all over the place that accept foreign cards. Some convenience stores, most department stores, not to mention the post offices themselves, which are also numerous. Be aware that in Japan, most ATM machines are not open all the time, but keep banking hours...so get your money during they day. Should you need cash outside of normal banking hours, the main post offices, as well as open department stores often have a post office machine that is open. This link should help too,
http://www.yu-cho.japanpost.jp/e_a0000000/aa200000.htm As far as the Hilton goes, just ask them at the front desk or exec lounge if you are on the exec floor where the nearest post office atm is. Be sure you have contacted your home bank regarding overseas use fees and withdrawal limits. Some banks have quite a high fee per transaction, and though the Japanese limit for withdrawal is shockinly high, your own card more than likely has a preset withdrawal limit that you'll need to deal with. So, give them a call so you are clear on all that regarding your home bank. |
If noboday can answer you here (sorry I can't), try to send an e-mail to Hotel Hilton and ask. They will most likely to be helpful and answer you fairly quickly.

First of all, don't forget to use the ones at the airport (I am presuming you are flying in.) Even at the airport, NOT all the ATM take foreign cards, but at least there are enough of them.
The hotels frequented by foreign visitors I stayed always had something already printed to give to me pointing to the nearest ATM, not always postoffice, that takes foreign cards. |
Thanks so much to you three. You've put my biggest fear to rest.... Japan with no money.

Hi
My wife and I went to Japan in May and we brought along our credit/debit cards to cash in Japan. We got cash at the Narita airport and we also got cash from different ATM's around Tokyo, Kyoto etc. There was only one night when we ran out of money where we had to walk alot to find a correct ATM. Look for the post office ATM's or CitiBank ATM's...they should work :-) I have posted a trip report with pictures on my personal homepage http://gardkarlsen.com. Maybe you can find some useful info there. Have a great trip :-) Regards Gard Stavanger, Norway |
If you have not left yet, here is a helpful link.
