Moderately Priced Kyoto Restaurants
I will be in Kyoto for 3 days at the beginning of June and need recommendations for reasonably priced restaurants, i.e., entrees around 3000 yen or less.

There is a keiten sushi (the conveyer belt ones) in Cube(?) building right next to the Kyoto station. Fresh and big piece of fish, thought it was a very good value. 2 people feasted for about 3500yen.

My wife doesn't eat sushi, any other suggestions?

Here's a website with info on restaurants in the Kyoto area
http://www.bento.com/kansai/index.html Also the building that W9London means, I think, adjacent to Kyoto Station has restaurants on the top floors. They all have menus outside with pictures or plastic food so you can see what is available. |
It would help if you would tell us what kind of food you are looking for, and in what areas.
Where are you staying? Where are you going? If you aren't interested in sushi, what are you interested in? I know a good and reasonable Italian restaurant in central Kyoto, close to the dept. store shopping at Takashiyama in central Kyoto, but are you interested in that? Do you want Japanese food or what? BTW, my experience has been that if you are only in Kyoto for a few days, you are likely going to be busy. Unless you are a foodie and really want to plan around a great meal or two at top places, you are probably going to do best at picking out a place near where you are when it is time to eat, and go for it. I have not had bad meals that way, in fact I have had some great finds that I still can recall w/great fondness. |
I cannot remember the name, but a local friend took me to a spaghetti shop on the top floor of Hankyu department store in central downtown (if such thing exists). They featured Japanese-flavoured pasta. Good value for lunch, cost around JPY1500, comes with drink/pud. Not a gourmet experience but good for a quick lunch. As emd mentioned, there are lots of restaurant on the top floor of department stores or train terminal buildings.

I will be staying at the Westin Miyako. I enjoy all food varieties other than sushi and Thai. My first choice would be Japanese, but recommendations for a good French or Italian or other type would also be appreciated.

There is a good family restaurant in the Teramachi shopping arcade that I went to multiple times. You enter from Kawaramachi sanjo and it is on the right. Very good moderately priced japanese food. I especially liked their misogi soba. It's handmade and tasty, but you have to be early as they only make so many orders. You know it's a good place when all the locals go there to eat.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the restaurant's name. It's Tagoto Honten.
