Millenium Hilton ??

Just wondering if anyone has had a chance to check this place out yet. I'd love to see pictures of their "beach"! Still trying to decide between Marriott, Reflections, and a few possible others. I'm still a little concerned about how "far" away the Marriott seems. Any input?

rhkkmk Jan 17th, 2006 06:33 PM

last report i had from kathie was that the hilton was not open as of december????

the marriott is not far away from anything....it will take 12 minutes by boat to the skytrain....other hotels will take over 5 but less than 10....sheraton more because they do not have their own boat...

what is reflections??

Kathie Jan 17th, 2006 07:21 PM

When I left Bangkok in early December the Millenium was not yet open. They were in the process of constructing a reception area inside River City for the hotel. At that point, I would have guessed at least another month. I don't know if they have opened yet, but their opening date is much delayed from earlier announcements.

JamesA Jan 17th, 2006 11:14 PM

According to R24 it opens March 15th, rates from about USD 115, though I guess their own website might have some special promotions.

Kathie Jan 18th, 2006 05:55 AM

James, I wonder if they will meet this date.

Months ago, it was supposed to be open in Oct-Nov, and I'd promised to go to take a look at it when I was there.

LA, I can't remember when your trip is scheduled, but if I were you I wouldn't book it for soon after it is supposed to open!

Kristina Jan 18th, 2006 08:57 AM

The Hilton website is accepting reservations after Feb 1, last time I checked. They have some good deals, depending on room type. It looks nice and I'm considering staying there in April for a night.

Kathie Jan 18th, 2006 09:00 AM

I don't want to be discouraging, but the Hilton website earlier was accepting reservations for November and they didn't make that date. If you do make reservations, you might want to have a back-up plan.

LA_FadeAway Jan 18th, 2006 11:28 AM

Thanks for the info everoyone. rhkkmk, Reflections is this nifty looking place: http://www.reflections-thai.com/rooms.html They have everything we need at a decent price, so it's still in the running.

LA_FadeAway Mar 3rd, 2006 02:17 PM

Any new news on this place. Somone on another board said it opened last week, but I haven't confirmed that anywhere. We're reserved at the Marriott for next month, but I'm still curious about this place. Looks like it has potential if it's open.

rhkkmk Mar 3rd, 2006 04:14 PM

it was to have opened this week according to hilton 800 #...i have a res for november, the first nite of loy krathang....we are looking forward to checking it out...

hawaiiantraveler Mar 3rd, 2006 05:42 PM

I am here in bkk and the hotel is now open....shuttle boats to Saphan Taskim pier run every half hour. They opened two weeks ago...about 30% occupancy now but expect to increase by August. Will report more when I return after 3/19

Aloha!

LA_FadeAway Mar 5th, 2006 10:29 PM

Anyone going soon, please be sure and report back as soon as you can. I'm booked at the Marriott for late April, but I'm tempted to switch to the new Hilton if it gets favorable reviews. Only problem is that I need to do it soon or I won't be able to change my reservation.

rhkkmk Mar 6th, 2006 09:32 AM

unless there is a premium for the hilton stay--much cheaper, i don't think the hotel will be as nice and certainly will not have nice grounds like the marriott

i'm paying $170 for hilton for one nite

LA_FadeAway Mar 6th, 2006 12:41 PM

Ouch! I found a site (www.eztrip.com) that has rooms starting at $85 + tax for the time we'll be there in late April. We're paying about $125 w/tax for a riverview room at the Marriott. Bob, I know you are a Marriott diehard, so it's probably hard for you to even compare the two :) I like the nice modern looks of the Hilton, but I'd hate to get there and find that they aren't really ready for customers yet.

LA_FadeAway Mar 6th, 2006 12:56 PM

Well, I've found what seems to be the first report on this place. This was posted by "rojaan1" on another forum:

"Well we have had two nights at the Millennium Hilton so far, and the hotel is in very soft opening as only 5 of the 30 floors are open. Let me say now the pool is fantastic - even the sunlounges are in six inches of water !!! You will see the photos when I post photos (but not till end of April !! sorry about that ) THe rooms are a normal hotel room, bathroom is all marble and not open plan, big bath, separate shower.Nice bed duvet covers and pillows. The boat to River City and the Sky train is working. You can hear some construction work during the day, but the othside of the hotel is completed - no major work here - only small stuff like steps to the boat ramp. The coffee shop looks good with a great range of food but we have not eaten there as we get comp breakfast in the ex lounge as my husband is hilton diamond honours. There are only 2 suites per floor (5 -29) and they are water front all other rooms have partial water views, some facilities are not open at this time, the main restaurant opens in two weeks, the day spa is not completed but there is a fully functional gym room off the pool. Would I stay here again ?? Probably NO as we would rather stay at the Penninsula even being Hilton Diamond members - hope this is off some help !!!!!!"

rhkkmk Mar 6th, 2006 07:20 PM

where is the pool....roof top or on some other floor or in the ground?

is the area between the hotel building and the river all landscaped or just open...in june it was all open concrete??

like all asian hotel openings they do it before they should....not many floors open...

my res if for november so i will hope to find it cheaper before then...

did i understand correctly that only two rooms per floor have direct river views---the suites??

thanks

LA_FadeAway Mar 6th, 2006 08:25 PM

Bob,
The person who posted that is on another forum. I've posted some more questions there, so hopefully they will reply. It sounds like the two end rooms on each floor have the direct river views, but the other rooms all have kind of sideways river views based on the shape of the building. I believe the pool is on the roof, but I may be wrong.

rhkkmk Mar 7th, 2006 05:35 AM

yes based on the building shape i think that is probably true....long and thin with the rounded part facing the river...

we primarily just want to see what they have done there after 10+ years of seeing that hulking building just standing there abandoned, plus it will be the first nite of loy krathang so we think the forecourt may be a great place to watch the fireworks from...

i am sure some reports will appear in the next month or so after people stay there...

Kathie Mar 7th, 2006 06:36 AM

So, Bob, do you have a suite reserved at the hotel for Loy Krathong?

LA_FadeAway Mar 7th, 2006 09:10 AM

Well, more info has been posted on the "other" forum. I don't know if I'm allowed to do this, but here is a link to the thread:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic...0-Bangkok.html

(I guess I'll find out if I'm allowed to do that or not!)

rhkkmk Mar 7th, 2006 10:07 AM

no, we have decided that we want to be outside for the fireworks...am hoping that the area between the hotel and river is still an open area....

we want you to have the best suite at ROS so did not want to encroach on that./....haha

Kathie Mar 7th, 2006 11:36 AM

Thank you Bob, very considerate of you...

orgy7 Mar 11th, 2006 07:09 AM

reflections is located in the "starving artists" community around ari BTS station not much for tourist going on up there.

LA_FadeAway Mar 11th, 2006 11:47 AM

Yeah, I ruled that one out for now, although people who have stayed there seem to like it well enough. I'm still reserved at the Marriott and will probably leave it that way sense it sounds like the Hilton still has a ways to go.

LA_FadeAway Mar 13th, 2006 07:15 PM

Well, the first review on Trip Advisor has been posted... it's pretty good!
http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...k-Bangkok.html

rhkkmk Mar 13th, 2006 07:52 PM

it sounds nice...i am trying it for the first nite of loy krathang....

tripper111777 May 30th, 2006 12:21 PM

Just got back from Bangkok and my 2 days stay at the Millenium Hilton. I have pictures of the beach. It's on the top floor of the hotel. Never seen anything like it. The hotel is very nice and modern. Has everything you need. The best bed and pillows I ever slept on. So comfortable that I fell right to sleep. One annoying thing is the bathroom shower. Unless you put couple of towels by the shower door, the entire floor will be flooded due to the shallowness of the bottom door ledge. They have 4 different types but expensive restaurants. One is the all you can eat Dim Sum lunch at the Asian restaurant for $500 bahts. Didn't get to try it but I heard it's one of the best. They have a great breakfast buffet, which is included with your room cost. I would recommend this hotel for business people and travelers who want a quiet stay and all the modern conveniences. But for tourists, I would suggest a hotel somewhere close to the center of the city, such as the Pathumwan Princess. It is right next to the enormous MBK shopping center. You can walk from the hotel lobby straight into the shopping mall. Also, the BTS skytrain is right outside MBK. I will post the beach pictures soon.

rhkkmk May 30th, 2006 06:01 PM

does the hotel have a shuttle to the skytrain like the other river hotels? i think so but have not seen it mentioned...

i have reconsidered my stay and will now be at the peninsula instead...

interesting about the shower...odd...

i love the location and disagree with your assessment, but to each his own..

hawaiiantraveler May 30th, 2006 07:35 PM

rhk:

When we were there in March they had a shuttle boat running to Taksim pier every half an hour. I asked the driver and he said when they get busier in a couple of months as more of the hotel opens up they would be shortening the length of the wait.

Aloha!

rhkkmk May 31st, 2006 06:13 AM

thanks

LA_FadeAway May 31st, 2006 11:12 AM

yep, I saw their boat running back and forth while we were there last month. I somewhat agree with tripper111777 about the location. As much as I loved the Marriott, I might go for something a bit more central next time. Or split time between the river and a central location if going through BKK twice on a trip.

BELLE0516 May 31st, 2006 11:49 AM

Just got back and was at the Hilton from thursday -sunday. They do have a boat shuttle that goes to the rivercenter, the oriental and the Taksin pier. we never had to wait more than 5 minutes for the shuttle. The one to the rivercenter runs more often b/c people seem to go there more.

I really loved the hilton. Why are you reconsidering? Will post soon in trip report about it. We didnt have a problem with the shower mentioned above. The views are spectacular. The place is awesome and breakfast is delicious with many selections. The location is very convenient as you can go to many different piers. I really enjoyed it, maybe slighlty (only slightly) more than the Marriott.

Kathie May 31st, 2006 01:24 PM

Belle, when you say rivercenter, do you mean River City (the arts and antiques shopping center directly across the river from the Hilton) or somewhere else?

BELLE0516 May 31st, 2006 01:32 PM

Ha! That's what I get for not proofreading. I meant river city. Yes the antiques place. The Hilton has a small lobby at river city, you can also check in there, get water, and they pretty much serve as concierge.

Kathie May 31st, 2006 01:41 PM

Ok, that's what I thought. When I was in Bangkok in November, they were still building the Hilton reception area in River City.

tripper111777 Jun 7th, 2006 12:23 PM

Hilton is a great hotel but the ideal is to book two hotels, one in the city center (for shopping), and couple of nights at the Hilton. This way you can have the best of both worlds. This is what we did and we had a great trip in Bangkok.

Here's a comment from Tripadvisor regarding the shower.

"the floor in the walk-in shower is completely flat and is barely half an inch lower than the bathroom floor level. For this reason, the drainage is unable to remove the shower water quickly enough, and the shower floods into the bathroom every time it is used, even with the door fully closed. Because of the flat-ness the water never drains away, and just remains overnight as a stagnant pool. The manager admitted that this is a fundamental design problem that affects many rooms. In my case, two bath mats were used (and soaked) after each shower, and still I had to tip-toe around the slippery bathroom floor while drying off - dangerous and unpleasant."

LA_FadeAway Jun 7th, 2006 01:24 PM

Damn, that sucks. What a headache for the managers! You'd think they would go ahead and put extra towels in all the rooms for everyone to deal with this.
