Mexican Restaurant in Bangkok
 

There is a new Mexican place called Coyote on Convent Road that is supposed to be good. I'll try to check it out. The best in Bangkok I've been to so far is Senior Pico at the Rembrandt Hotel.

Doesn't this violate some sort of cross-cultural contamination rule? A person from Illinois eating Mexican Food in BKK? Where do they get the Chipolte sauce? Is there blue corn in Thailand? Who pounds the tortillas?

I don't know ... I like going to London to eat Indian food...

london has a huge indian population so it's actually a good destination for it. not quite the same analogy.

There are good Italian and French restaurants in Bangkok - why can't there be good mexican restaurants?

There are EXCELLENT Italian restaurants in BKK!! Mexican at Senor Pico isn't great, but it isn't bad.

I agree, why NOT sample all kinds of food. BKK is a very international city.

i thought senor pico to be quite expensive is coyote less expensive?? i will put it on my list....

brad ---have you tried 8 degrees also on convent....great italian....and there is a nice thai place next door that i am trying next time...

they are where maranga used to be...sort of a soi off of convent...

First of all, I average three months a year here, so I feel like something different sometimes. And Mexican food is one of my favorites.

Unfortunately, Bangkok isn't the best place for it. Mexican cooks and Mexican ingredients must be too far away?

I did eat at Coyote last night. The Platinum Cadillac Margaritas were fantastic, but at 685 Baht ($17+ US) they weren't cheap. The black beans were very good and my enchiladas were OK.

But the chips were aweful (not fresh & hot like I like.) The salsa tasted like some kind of red Thai sauce. And the appetizer platter had beef & chicken satay.

My experience with Mexican food here is that the ingredients are first quality. A good example is the fresh squeezed juices in the drinks. But they don't have Mexican chilis or fresh tortillas & chips, and no Mexican cooks that I've found.

I can wait until I get to Vegas next month to have it again.

I've stayed at Ceasar's, The Frontier, The Orleans, The Riviera, The San Remo, Treasure Island, The Venetian, and probably more that I can't remember. The Venetian had the best rooms, but I like the location of the San Remo best if I rent a car. It will be a Hooters Hotel soon.

We'll be at the Orleans once again on this trip coming up. Nice place, a little off the strip but easy to get back and forth.

I went to Coyote's on Convent this weekend, and I was very disapointed. I don't understand why there is not an EXCELLENT Mexican place in Bangkok. I always joke with my friends that I guess the Mexican expat community here is not very big...

There's no excuse for not making good Mexican food in Thailand -- the ingredients are all here (most of 'em, anyway)! It's just that the Mexicans aren't here (certainly not anywhere near Coyote on Convent)!!! And, unfortunately, it all turns out to be very "Thai style". I had such high hopes. Too bad. The fajitas (usually a safe bet) didn't sizzle and the outrageously priced margaritas didn't do much either. I was impressed by the uninhibited use of the New Mexico state seal and the very nice selection of hot sauces...beyond that I'll have to say that the best Mexican food in Bangkok is still at my house. Too bad that the owners didn't do a little more research before pouring their money into what will no doubt be a flash in the pan.

Good Mexican? An oxymoron.
