Men's Clothing & Bangkok
 

We have plans for first time in BKK this summer. There has been lots abt women's clothing. What is suitable attire for men to visit the Grand Palace/have lunch at one of the better hotels/etc.? Are Bermuda shorts OK for shopping & most activities?
Are Tommy Bahama-type shirts (collared silk or cotton or linen shirts not worn tucked in) available ready-made? Has anyone had them made? Cost?
Also, for visiting Angkor Wat - shorts?

I have had clothes made in Bangkok. Very good value and good quality for shirts and pants. I have not had jackets or suits made there; I save that for Hong Kong.
Your hotel should be able to recommend a good tailor.

In my experience, you don't see too many men in shorts in Thailand. The khaki type of comfortable pants and printed shirt (tucked in our out) is what you see mostly. The cotton or linen fabric is more comfortable in the heat.

I always use the same tailor for my womens' stuff, and son and hubby have both had suits and shirts made by the same shop. Son had some shirts made to match a designer shirt in design/cut/style that he really liked and is very happy with the "copies."

"My" tailor is located at the bottom of exit #1 stairway, at National Stadium skytrain stop. The Boss tailor shop is where I always go.

strangly enough it's the richer men that wear khaki type shorts.. but it is rare too see them. well atleast in central downtown.. the guys usually were them while cutting their lown are hanging out at thier "homes"

i think shorts are fine around the pool and at resorts, but for me, they are not appropriate in bkk or other city scapes...i like my legs covered from dirt, river water, flies, etc and of course the sun...shorts will not work at the grand palace...you do see people with them on but they look out of place...most restaurants would allow you in but you might feel out of place in top notch places....i prefer chinos...
shirts with colors are seen everywhere...don't know about purchasing the ones you mention, but they are probably there--fake cheap and real the same price as at home
