MATSUMOTO, NAGANO, YAMANOUCHI or KARUIZAWA
Hello all, Having been to Japan several times and have visited Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Tokyo, Kobe, Shikoku island, Kumamoto (Kyushu) and Sapporo, am looking at Nagano and Matsumoto this time. Has anyone visited Yamanouchi or Karuizawa? Is there another day trip city that you recommend? Looking for the more traditional and cultural Japan this time. Thanks!

If you rent a car in Nagano you can do the Romantic Road on your way to Karuizawa. I have done part of the road from the Nikko side but just started and had to turn back after a few hours because I was staying in Nasu at the time. Plan to be back soon to do the entire route. Very easy drive with no traffic unless during the koyo. To do it right you need at least three to four days with the required onsen overnight stops in between, lol

Better to go to Ymanouchi in the winter if you are into skiing.
Aloha!
