Marriott Resort or JW Marriott - help please!?

We have now booked our flights to Bangkok for April, and am planning to stay at the Royal Orchid for the first two nights, followed by an internal flight up to Chiang Rai, staying three nights at the Baan Boran (ex le meridien), then back to Bangkok for another 6 nights.

I have a dilemma in that I cannot decide between whether to stay for the 6 nights at the Marriott Resort and Spa or the JW Marriott. If I book them via Priceline, they work out to be fairly similar in price to within a few dollars but I realise they are in completely different locations. I would appreciate your thoughts to help me make a decision! Thanks!

Stayed at Baan Boran on our last trip to Thailand 8 years ago. Loved that hotel. Swiss chef. Conceriege got us an excellent guide, car and driver to drive through the mountains.
The Marriott Resort is on the river and is a resort hotel. The JW is more a business hotel. If you want to sightsee stay on the river so you can go to the Palace, etc. by boat. The car traffic in Bangkok is terrible.

I second the vote for the Marriott Resort on the river. I have stayed there many times and much prefer it to the JW.

You really don't want to be in downtown Bangkok where the JW is. It is so much more pleasant along the river, esepcially as you have such a long stay and can relax by the pool for a bit. The Marriott resort has what I think is the best pool in Bangkok, large and with lots of shade trees to get out of the sun!

They have a wonderful spa, you can even get a massage outdoors by the pool. They also have a Jim Thompson shop that is large and well-stocked. There is a small shopping center attached to the hotel as well. The staff is very friendly.

Price and ask for a junior suite (they are larger than the regular bedrooms and have bigger bathrooms). Most rooms are river view, but do ask for one anyway just to make sure.

The hotel is a bit further down the river from the Royal Orchid area, but there is a free shuttle boat that runs every half hour and takes you up to that area and the subway stop on the river.

Thank you both Elaine and Nancy. I was really keen to get the hotels booked up, and I successfully bid for the Marriott Resort on Priceline last night for $47 per night, which as far as I am concerned is a real result!! I have also now booked the Royal Orchid too and am just awaiting confirmation on the Baan Boran. I am so excited already and I still have three months to wait!

Louise
how did you manage to bid for the Marriott Resort on Priceline? I thought that you could not name the accomodation? this is what has put me off bidding on Priceline in the past.

LouiseUK Jan 14th, 2003 10:10 AM

Hi Jon

You are correct, you cannot name the accommodation, however, if you read www.biddingfortravel.com beforehand, they list the accommodation in the specific areas based on star level, so I knew that the only 4 star hotel in Riverside Silom area is the Marriott. I also knew that winning bids were being obtained for $47 currently, however, I tried 42, 44, 45 and 46 first - just in case!

Hope that helps!
