Marriott Resort, BKK and restaurants
Just as we've settled on the Marriott for the first four days of our five week trip, giving us a lovely pool for the two year old to play in whilst she gets acclimatised etc, I have done a search on 'Marriott' and 'restaurants' and am having trouble finding recommendations for restaurants for dinner on that side of the river. If we use a hotel babysitter so we can go out, I don't want to be too far away. Any suggestions? There is the restaurant in the nearby mall that Bob recommended for a low key supper, and then the Peninsula restaurants. What are the restaurants like at the Marriott itself? Does the Marriott boat run at night? If so, that opens up the Shangri La and Oriental and hotels near there as possibilities.
Many thanks |
meant to add, not a fan of buffets for food safety reasons...

Hi!
We had a lovely meal at Trader Vics in the hotel. Prices are far more expensive than local restaurants but it is the same in all hotels. The Marriot boat does run at night up until about midnight. Harmonique is within walking distance of the drop off point. Great place. Do a search on this forum to see what others think about it.I'm sure others will come up with suggestions. Enjoy your holiday! |
I think Bob has said that the boats run until midnight so the Shangri-la and Oriental hotels and the restaurants in the area around them would be good options. I don't know about the Shangri-la but I have seen children that age at many of the restaurants at the Oriental. BTW-- the Oriental also has a day care center for children in the hotel.

Bella B, thanks for asking the question I was about to ask. We don't have 5 weeks :-( only have 3 nights to do dinners in BKK, one in Bed and 2 others. Don't want to "waste" a valuable night, but it might be helpful to have a great choice near Marriott after a long day of sightseeing/shopping. Would you eat at one of the nearby hotels, or suck it up and go "back into town" for one of the restaurants that keep popping up here?
(didn't mean to step on your thread BB but maybe this will help you too). |
that is correct the boats run until 11 or 12 and start about 6 AM...
not much to choose from on that side of the river really....a couple of seafood places i have not tried...there seems to be a new one just past the bridge on the river side---sort of next to the marriott if the bridge were not there if you can vision that...walking distance.. taking the boat you could try anything at the peninsula all of which are fantastic, expecially the al fresco thai restaurnat with set meals for two...harmonique at soi 34, new road, next to the post office---the soi is next to the post office....tongue thai in back of OP Place in back of the oriental...lord jim's in the oriental....angelinni in the shangri-la....note the thai rest. on the river at sh-la got a not so great review here recently.....gourmet cafe near to the sheraton....the bbq rest. on top of river city mall with its nice alfresco river view....himili cha cha indian just off new road not far from harmonique but on the other side of new road.... the rest. in the mini mall at the marriott is excellent and very cheap...take the kids there... the food at the marriott is good, albeit expensive for bkk....the rice mill is very good---chines and a pleasant setting....trader vics---not for me and expensive--....there is a benni hana also expensive---i don't really like it either.....we have had good marriott burgers and other things in the small restaurant/bakery on the ground floor of the main building.....the food at the pool is excellent....of course everything at the hotel is ++--add 17.7% tax and service..... you would not be disappointed with marriott food but there are so many other great places in bkk to eat cheaper and better....i have a new restaurant lising i put together if anyone is interested send me an e-mail: [email protected] and i will be glad to send it to you...just our favorites |
Excellent - thank you. Whilst we are on that side of the river, I think we will definitely go to the Peninsula. Others we will try are Harmonique and Tongue Thai. I think we will eat at the Marriott with our 2 year old in the daytime and for her early evening meals and head out for ours. Have just had (very!) good news that my parents are joining us early on in our trip so we will have known babysitters on some nights and could head further afield now.
123GO - we have stayed previously in Bangkok for 3 night visits and stayed at the Shangri La just across the river from the Marriott (and along a bit). We would normally have one meal nr the hotel or in it and then head off back into town for our other evening meals. Taxis are cheap and plentiful (you can get the restaurant you eat at to order you one back) so, without the restriction of a small and wakeful child, there is not much to hold you back!! Bob, re. the Shangri La, I love Angelini and the bar next door but also found the thai restaurant on the river lacking. The food just lacked that certain something, although the setting on the river with the pretty lights in the trees was lovely. Glorialf - my financial 'trade off' for staying at the Marriott early on in our visit, is a stay at the Oriental later in our trip - possibly at the end after our wedding as part of our 'honeymoon' - so thanks for tip re. childcare at the Oriental. thanks again all |
Bella-- then obviously save the Oriental restaurants until you're staying ther. My favorites at the hotel are China House (order Peking Duck) and Lord Jim. Also they have a very good riverside buffet.
