Manhole covers in Japan

For years, my family has laughed as I photograph the manhole covers in Japan. I always joke about prying them out of the street and taking one home, though It would have to be one of the tiny ones. Now I find out searching for manholes is a "thing", and I am officially a Drainspotter.!

This is from Washinosato, a paper-making village near Takefu in Echizen, Fukui

Love the squid, Mara! And Washinosato's is beautiful! I love how they can get so much detail and motion in these 110 pound slabs of cast metal, especially when you think of how many cars and truck they have to support every day.

Thanks, lcuy, mine is Washinosato, but the squid was Burta's not mine...lol....it's a bit hard to read posts with photos - I think they could definitely be smaller....

I want to make an album of manhole covers from around Japan but haven't gotten around to it.

I love them! What a wonderful series! So beautiful - elegance in the most mundane or pragmatic object..

Wow, how great!

I didn’t notice the manhole covers, and I’ll have to go drainspotting next time. But there are so many mundane things that are unexpectedly adorable or beautiful in Japan.

Thanks for reminding me of some of the delightful things I saw while in Japan, and providing glorious pictures of the manhole covers from cities I have yet to visit -- so enticing!

Thanks for sharing the photos.
Brought back wonderful memories of my trips to Japan. I had noticed and admired them while I was there.
Japan is just such a beautiful and artistic country.
