Mango7 to BKK in October: Hotel suggs?

Hi everyone. I've been away from the forum for a while, but here I am planning the next Thai trip! We will go to Chiang Mai, Phuket (and Bkk of course!). I will be bringing the old man (dad) for his first time to Asia.

In Bkk we usually stay at the Sofitel Silom, Swiss Lodge, Novo Siam Square,
or Le Bua, but we like to stay at different places on each trip (This is #6). Does anyone have strong recommendations for a nice mid-level hotel in central Bkk? I guess the most we want to spend is $110/night since we feel that its a sin to waste $$ on a room we will never be in except for sleeping. Thanks if you can help!

Regards

Kurt

Pathumwan Princess, is connected to MBK and the BTS is connected to the mall. Another one is Holiday Inn by Chidlom. BTS is right in front of the hotel and I find it to be quite centrally located.

Adelphi Suites on Soi 8, near the Nana BTS station.

Unfortunately, $110 doesn't go as far as it used to in Bangkok. The Asia hotel still starts below that point, as do several of the Unico properties, which have had favorable reports here. Siam Heritage and a new place called Le Fenix (managed by Accor) are also in that price range.

The Princess and Holiday Inn are both very nice, but they're also both well over $125 a night now.

Thank you guys/gals very much! I am looking into what you recommend. The Siam Heritage looks nice. Its true, hotel prices have really changed. I remember staying at the Novotel Siam for $56/night in '03..Now $125! :P

Staying at HI Ploenchit has convinced me that BKK is ONE Big Night market.

hi kurt welcome back...

micahel is right, prices have really risen this year and the exchange rates make it even more expensive...my usual marriott stay at about $100 per nite is now $160 at least this year and that is off season...

by going in october you still get the low season rate until oct 31...

my favorites are the marriott of course....look at majestic grande on soi 2, sukhumvit, right in back of the jw marriott....also the newish bangkok holiday inn on plenochit.....

have you thought about serviced apartments?? centre point silom might work for you and the skytrain is right next door...any of the centre points really are good...

the marriott courtyard in back of the four seasons is new and convenient....

asiarooms.com seems to have the best prices for me this year...

in CM many like baan orprin or yang come village.....

Hi R,

Nice to hear from you again, thank you very much!

I am going to look at what you suggested. I did look at Siam@Siam and Siam Heritage. Both look pretty nice and are in the area we love (Siam/Silom). HI Ploenchit looks nice. Will keep you posted. Going to Siam any time soon? :)

Hi-
You might also consider Priceline. I haven't looked lately, but it's been possible in the past to find decent rooms that way.
Try looking at www.biddingfortravel.com and www.betterbidding.com to get ideas of what rooms have been going for lately.

Maybe try Ratt's new b and b. It looks nice and seems to be well located and is very cheap.

rhkkmk Apr 10th, 2008 05:49 AM

yes, we leave on april 29 for bkk

glorialf Apr 10th, 2008 06:16 AM

Bob-- any chance you could take a look at Ratt's b and b while you're there and give us all a report?

I will be staying at the Adelphi Suites again, on Sukhumvit soi 8. A studio would cost you less than $100, I believe. Great location in the heart of things, and only steps to the escalator UP to the skytrain.

Kristina- Thanks for the tip :)

Rhk- That's awesome! You go every year?

rhkkmk Apr 10th, 2008 07:08 PM

we would go more often if we could...it averages about once every 1.2 years

Mango7 Apr 10th, 2008 08:18 PM

We once were going at 6 month intervals but the jetlag after coming home was awful...and we found ourselves getting a tad bored (Imagine that!) We can't think of anywhere else we'd rather be in the world tho. It really has everything. Lucky if I can retire there in about 20 yrs :)

simpsonc510 Apr 12th, 2008 05:57 AM

I'm probably going to BKK at least 3 times this year, possibly 4. I've already been in February and am heading back next week. We are planning on spending the Christmas holidays in Thailand this year, so that's three, at least!

I was averaging twice a year though, since 2001. But since I retired in 04, I've been able to go "whenever"...

Carol- That's awesome you do that. If I was retired that would be a different story! Why don't you just buy a home there? (I almost did last October, southwest of Suvarnabhumi..Really beautiful homes)
