Malaysia with a 6 year old?

Hello! My husband and I are planning a trip to Malaysian Borneo with our 6 year old next April. We will spend a week and a half in Sabah, and then have about 4 days to go somewhere else..... good ideas with a kiddo that age? Our ideas at the moment are sarawak (is there enough to do with a small one in tow that is different from what we would have already seen in Sabah?), brunei, kuala lumpur ( and day trip) or....? We are headed back to the states at the end so don't want to travel too far in the wrong direction, and definitely want a short, easy flight ( no longer than 3 hours) from Kota Kinabalu. We don't love big cities and are more interested in animals and cultural experiences, but also need to choose things our daughter will be on board with!

I don't know what your plans are for Sabah, but we loved Sarawak as well and found different things to do and see in Sarawak. Kuching is a charming city with a lovely waterfront promenade. There is an excellent (cultural) museum in the city which has exhibits that I expect would interest a 6 y.o. You an also drive to nearby beaches for a day.

I recommend against visiting Brunei. KL is a big city but I find not as interesting as the much smaller Kuching. If you want a big city stop, I'd recommend Singapore over KL. Lots of things of interest to children in Singapore.

I pretty much agree with Kathie’s suggestions. However, is very difficult to make any meaningful suggestions without knowing where you are going and what you are doing in Sabah. I like Kuching (and prefer it to Kota Kinabalu) there are nice beaches out on Bako NP, "cultural" villages and orangutan sanctuaries all within a couple of hours. 4 days there with side trips would be good for keeping the interest of a six year old.

For more natural wonders, you could take a flight to Miri for Mulu NP and some of the largest caves in the world and a jungle experience. Niah Caves is another option.

Being within a three hour flight of KK gives you a lot of options as Air Asia have the most developed route networks in Asia ( and are very inexpensive if booked ahead) . It would be worth taking a look at their online route planner to ascertain your options.
