Malarone in Bangkok
can malarone and other prescription drugs be purchased in Bangkok with out a prescription??? are drugs regulated there for dates and potency???
|
Unless you live there why wouldn't you purchase it at home where you know what your getting.
|
Malarone drugs (I just got prescription)you need to start taking 2 days before arrival to the area. Therefore it is recommended to get in advance.
|
Malarone is NOT available in Bangkok. The only place in SE Asia where it is available is in SIngapore, by prescription only, prices comperable to North America, Europe and Australia.
Many prescription drugs can be purchased over the counter in Thailand and elsewhere in SE Asia. Counterfit and expired drugs are a major problem in SE Asia. One-third of anti-malarials purchased by travelers to SE Asia were found in a recent study to be fakes. While Bangkok does not have as much of this problem as other SE Asian countries, still be cautious of any medication you buy in SE Asia. Recommendations for buying medications in SE Asia: Buy in the largest city you are visiting (the meds in Bangkok are less likely to be expired than those in a rural area); buy name-brand medications rather than generics; buy from a reputable pharmacy such as a hospital pharmacy or an international chain, such as Boots. |
thanks everyone for the input. we live in hawaii and the prices here are
higher than mainland prices. we have a week in bangkok before heading into the northern areas and cambodia. dont want to take any chances tho |
divediva,
you are right, the prices here in mainland USA are $104 per person. And insurance does not cover it - would cover if I would get sick - but would not cover as a precation - how dumb is that! You might want to shop around here in US. I am trying to get it under $70 usd.. Try online in Canada if you have time... |
If you have a Costco store in your area, it has some of the lowest prices on Malarone in the US.
|
I just purchased 25 Malarone tablets today in Canada (they were $125.00 CAD)..Thank goodness that our medical plan covered 85% so all I had to pay was $25.00..They are very expensive..
|
costco it is...saved us about a $100.
for the 3 of us.... getting excited....only 25 days till we depart |
I'm so glad, diva. The nurse at my travel clinic gave me that tip.
|
Yeah...Malarone is expensive. I was on it while in Ghana Dec 2003/Jan 2004 and thankfully my medical insurance paid all of it except for $5.00. I saw the receipt in my prescription bag and it would have been something like $125...or $135... for 21 pills! Happy Travels!
|
The prices for Malarone are expensive running anywhere from $90 to $140, so it's important to shop around. Thankfully my drug plan covered mine at $50. But not to take the drugs and use repellent from dusk to dawn, would be a mistake. Glad Costco came thru for you. Enjoy your trip.
