Malarone and Drug Interaction

Hello Fodorites,
I am trying to get this data from a professional travel doctor - but I am running out of time! Does anyone have any experience with being on zoloft and taking malarone? How about metformin and malarone? Thanks for any advice. My regular doctor told me I have to go to travel doctor for the prescription, and the travel doctor is all booked up - I am leaving in a week.

i take metformin and and have taken malerone three times with no problems, BUT you need to check with your doctor as every case is different...

how about calling your pharmacy and ask them also...??

consider calling a teaching hospital's infectious disease department...

also some major airports have travel medical units that you might contact...for instance our airport here in boston has one...

Ask a pharmacist about the interaction. They have online access to this information. If there are no problems there, then ask the pharmacist how your doctor should order the Malarone for you. Give this info to your doctor. When I asked my doctor about a Rx of malarone, he said he wasn't familiar with it, but when I gave him the ordering info, he wrote the prescription.

I agree that a pharmacist can help you chack the drug interaction info. As far as I know, ther are no interactions with either of those drugs. I'm rather suprised that your own doc wouldn't check the drug interactions, as there are simple computer databases that check these interactions.

I'd print out the prescribing information on malarone. Go to www.malarone.com and go to the page that has prescribing info for your doctor. Print this out and take it to your doctor.

By the way, I'm assuming that you have done your homework and know that you will be in malarial risk areas. www.cdc.gov/travel

Thank you very much for your advice. I actually spoke with my pharmacist, and there are no interactions. Now I hope to get the prescription from my doctor.
I also purchased today bug repellant to bathe my clothes with, and Ultrathon for my skin. I am super prepared. I am heading to Siem Reap, Luang Prabang, and Vietnam.
In Vietnam, we are staying at the new Nam Hai as well as the Evason Hideaway at Ana Mandara for part of the time. I plan to report back!
