malaria pills make you ill?

Our doctor has given us pills to be taken one day prior to our two week vacation and then everyday thereafter.
I've heard that malaria hardly exists in the cities and that the pills can make you feel miserable.

Where are you going?

Which anti-malarial are you taking?

Is the doctor who prescribed the medication a travel medicine or tropical medicine doctor?

What type of malaria medication are you speaking of? There are several different ones. I was on Malarone in Dec 2003/Jan 2004 and Dec 2004/Jan 2005 while in Ghana, West Africa. The first time it was difficult. The second time, I was better, but I still had stomach pains for a day and I always felt...not myself...The first time I was counting the days before I would be off of the medication. And the second time, I wasn't looking forward to having to go on the medication again. However, I've heard that Malarone is better than Larium. I personally refuse to take Larium although there are those who have no reaction to it, but I've heard some horror stories about Larium and from people who were on it. Plus, if one is on Malarone and gets malaria anyhow, then one can't be treated with the same malaria medication for the cure. Larium or other medications could be given for the cure. Happy Travels!

Just took a course of Malarone and had no problems. I did take it with a meal as suggested.

I've been taking Malarone twice for India, and the first time had bad headaches, but the second time, i didn't have any side effects at all, except for the very 1st pill that i took made me feel light headed..My husband says he feels strange when he takes them, so i guess each person is different..

I always took my Malarone with a meal, but still had problems. There were some posts on this over a year ago where others had the same problem...stomach. It's in the brochure, on Malarone, that this can occur. The stomach problem put me in bed. Happy Travels!
